Electric Explosive Atmosphere Standards

Standards for the use of an electrical apparatus in a potentially explosive atmosphere, such as in the presence of combustible dust, or in Zone 20, Zone 21, or Zone 22 Hazardous (Classified) locations, detail the inherent dangers of the association between an electrical device and a surrounding ignitable atmosphere. Focusing on intrinsic solutions, this array of standards outlines their general requirements, construction, and testing. Additionally, hose assemblies for protecting electrical cables are addressed, as well as test methods for determining the minimum ignition temperature and electrical resistivity of dust.

ISO/IEC 80079-20-2:2016

Explosive atmospheres - Part 20-2: Material characteristics - Combustible dusts test methods

ISO/IEC 80079-20-2:2016 is published as a dual logo standard and describes the test methods for the identification of combustible dust and combustible dust layers in order to permit classificationof areas where such materials exist for the purpose of the proper selection and installation of electrical and mechanical equipment for use in the presence of combustible dust. The standard atmospheric conditions for determination of characteristics of combustible dusts are:- temperature -20 °C to 60 °C,- pressure 80 kPa (0,8 bar) to 110 kPa (1,1 bar) and- air with normal oxygen content, typically 21 % v/v. The test methods defined do not apply to:- recognized explosives, propellants (e.g. gunpowder, dynamite), or substances or mixtures of substances which may, under some circumstances, behave in a similar manner or- dusts of explosives and propellants that do not require atmospheric oxygen for combustion, or to pyrophoric substances. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 61241-2-1 published in 1994, the first edition of IEC 61241-2-2 published in 1993 and the first edition of IEC 61241-2-3 published in 1994, combining the requirements into a single document, and is considered to constitute a technical revision. Significant changes with respect to IEC 61241-2-1:1994, IEC 61241-2-2:1993 and IEC 61241-2-3:1994 can be found in the foreword of the document. Keywords: combustible dust

Definitions and Information Pertaining to Electrical Equipment in Hazardous (Classified) Locations

This document provides general guidance for safe design, installation, and maintenance of electrical equipment in hazardous (classified) locations using appropriate means to prevent ignition of flammable gases and vapors, flammable liquids, combustible dusts, or ignitable fibers or flyings.

ANSI/ISA 12.10.06-2006 (R2011)

Electrical Apparatus for Use in Zone 21 and Zone 22 Hazardous (Classified) Locations - Protection by Pressurization "pD"

This standard gives requirements on the design, construction, testing and marking of electrical apparatus for use in combustible dust atmospheres in which a protective gas (air or inert gas), maintained at a pressure above that of the external atmosphere, is used to prevent the entry of dust which might otherwise lead to the formation of a combustible mixture within enclosures which do not contain a source of combustible dust.

ANSI/ISA 12.12.01-2015

Nonincendive Electrical Equipment for Use in Class I and II, Division 2 and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations

This standard has been replaced with UL 121201, Nonincendive Electrical Equipment for Use in Class I and II, Division 2 and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations. ANSI/ISA-12.12.01-2015 was maintained for reference purposes only for a 5-year period following the publication of UL 121201, co-published with CSA C22.2 No. 213-17, on September 15, 2017, until officially withdrawn by ISA on September 15, 2022. The purpose of this standard is to provide minimum requirements for the design, construction, and marking of electrical equipment or parts of such equipment for use in Class I and Class II, Division 2 and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2 hazardous (classified) locations. This equipment, in normal operation, is not capable of causing ignition of the surrounding atmosphere under the conditions prescribed in this standard, although the equipment may contain electronic components used in an incendive circuit and may also have field wiring that is an incendive circuit. In addition, it is the intent of this document to establish uniformity in test methods for determining the suitability of the equipment and associated circuits and components as they relate to potential ignition of a specific flammable gas or vapour-in-air mixture, combustible dust, easily ignitible fibers, or flyings.
