Test Methods for Nuts

Test method standards for fasteners cover test procedures for screws and nuts, gauging their performance under the conditions they are intended for. Test procedures are available for both inch and metric series fasteners. This list contains standards from IFI on test methods for nuts.

IFI-155:2005

Test Procedure for the Performance of Nonmetallic Resistant Element Prevailing-Torque Nuts

This standard establishes a test procedure for nonmetallic resistant element prevailing-torque nuts having coarse threads, to determine their conformance with specified prevailing-torque requirements in nominal sizes #10 thru 1 in. intended for application temperatures of - 49°F to 250°F. Both partial (less than 360°) and full circumference (360°) element designs are included.

IFI-555:2005

Test Procedure for the Performance of Nonmetallic Resistant Element Prevailing-Torque Nuts - Metric Series

This standard establishes a conformance test procedure for metric nonmetallic resistant element prevailing-torque nuts with specified prevailing-torque requirements, in nominal sizes M4 thru M20 intended for application temperatures of - 45°C to 120°C. Both partial (less than 360°) and full circumference (360°) element designs are included.

IFI-160:2007

Test Procedure for the Performance of Nuts With Pre-applied Adhesive Coated Threads - Inch Series

This standard provides a means of evaluating the locking performance of pre-applied adhesives on inch nuts.

IFI-560:2007

Test Procedure for the Performance of Nuts With Pre-applied Adhesive Coated Threads - Metric Series

This standard provides a means of evaluating the locking performance of pre-applied adhesives on metric nuts.

ISO 10484:1997

Widening test on nuts

This International Standard specifies the test procedure for evaluating the acceptability of surface discontinuities designated in ISO 6157-2 excluding nuts made of free cutting steel. It applies to nuts with property classes to ISO 898-2 and ISO 898-6; nominal thread diameter, d, from 5 mm up to and including 39 mm; product grades A and B.

ISO 9140:1998

Aerospace - Nuts, plain or slotted (castellated) - Test methods

This International Standard specifies test methods for metric plain or slotted (castellated) nuts, with MJ threads in accordance with ISO 5855-2, for use in aerospace construction. It describes the test device and the method for each test. It is applicable to nuts as defined above, provided that the relevant documents (product standard, definition document, procurement specification, etc.) refer to this International Standard. This International Standard is to be used in conjunction with ISO 9139 or any other similar document.

ISO 8642:2008

Aerospace - Self-locking nuts with maximum operating temperature greater than 425 degrees C - Test methods

ISO 8642:2008 specifies test methods for metric self-locking nuts with MJ threads intended for use in aerospace construction at maximum operating temperature greater than 425 °C. It describes the test device and the method for each test. ISO 8642:2008 applies to self-locking nuts as defined above, provided that the relevant documents (dimensional standard, drawing, procurement specification, etc.) refer to this International Standard. Other test devices or test methods than those specified in ISO 8642:2008 may be used, but, in the event of a dispute, the requirements laid down in this International Standard shall take precedence. ISO 8642:2008 shall be used in conjunction with ISO 8641.
