Bitumen

Bitumen particle testing standards are published by BS, ISO, and ASTM. BS standards cover topics from particle size distribution, affinity between aggregate and bitumen, porous asphalt particle loss, permeability of specimen, binder content by ignition, particle polarity of bituminous emulsions, and determining residue by sieving and pH values. ISO/TS 14423 covers carbonaceous materials used in aluminum production, and more specifically the determination of effective binder content and aggregate size distribution. ASTM D2489 covers the standard test method for estimating degree of particle coating of asphalt mixtures.

BS EN 1430:2009

Bitumen and bituminous binders. Determination of particle polarity of bituminous emulsions (British Standard)

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the particle polarity of bituminous emulsions. WARNING — The use of this standard may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

BS EN 1429:2013

Bitumen and bituminous binders. Determination of residue on sieving of bituminous emulsions, and determination of storage stability by sieving (British Standard)

This European Standard specifies methods utilising sieving for the determination of the quantity of coarse particles of binder present in bitumen emulsions, and for the determination of storage stability.

BS EN 12850:2009

Bitumen and bituminous binders. Determination of the pH value of bituminous emulsions (British Standard)

This European Standard specifies a method for measuring the pH value of bituminous emulsions. It is applicable to anionic, cationic and non-ionic bitumen emulsions. NOTE In certain circumstances, the pH value can provide an indication of the ionic character of a bitumen emulsion. However, this indication should be confirmed by a particle polarity test conforming to EN 1430 [1]. WARNING — The use of this standard can involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

ISO/TS 14423:1999

Carbonaceous materials used in the production of aluminium -- Cold-ramming pastes -- Determination of effective binder content and aggregate content by extraction with quinoline, and determination of aggregate size distribution

This Technical Specification describes a method for determining the content and particle-size distribution of the solid aggregate component, and also for determining the effective binder content, of cold-ramming pastes used in aluminium manufacture. The method is applicable to cold-ramming pastes made with coal-tar or bituminous binders but not applicable to resin-based binders.

ASTM D2489/D2489M-16

Standard Test Method for Estimating Degree of Particle Coating of Asphalt Mixtures

1.1 This test method provides an estimate of the degree of particle coating in an asphalt-aggregate mixture on the basis of the percentage of coarse particles classified as being completely coated. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
