NFPA 286-2015

NFPA 286 Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Evaluating Contribution of Wall and Ceiling Interior Finish to Room Fire Growth , 2015 edition

1.1* Scope. This standard applies only to advanced light water reactor electric generating plants and provides minimum fire protection requirements to ensure safe shutdown of the reactor, minimize the release of radioactive materials to the environment, provide safety to life of on-site personnel, limit property damage, and protect continuity of plant operation. The fire protection is based on the principle of defense-in-depth. For plants that have adopted a risk-informed, performance based approach to fire protection, subsequent changes to the fire protection program shall be made in accordance with NFPA 806, Performance-Based Standard for Fire Protection for Advanced Nuclear Reactor Electric Generating Plants Change Process. A.1.1 This standard does not address water-moderated or water-cooled nuclear reactors used for training, testing, experimental purposes or the production of special nuclear materials as defined in the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended. Refer to NFPA 801, Standard for Fire Protection for Facilities Handling Radioactive Materials. This standard does not address light water nuclear power plants with construction permits issued prior to January 1, 1979. An advanced nuclear reactor electric generator station that has opted to use a risk-informed, performance-based approach to fire protection will use NFPA806, Performance-Based Standard for Fire Protection for Advanced Nuclear Reactor Electric Generating Plants Change Process, to determine the acceptability of that change.
