Intelligent Transportation Systems

Transportation standards for controller area networks (CAN), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and Traffic and Travel Information (TTI) all seek to provide an interoperable set of devices, sensors, data, and communication protocols in cars and roadways that work together to provide additional functionality such as On Board Diagnostics or traffic monitoring to help relieve congestion.

Controller Area Network - CAN

Controller Area Network (CAN) standards cover the CAN bus, designed and implemented to allow different components within a vehicle to communicate with each other without needing a host computer. As a textbook example of interoperability, standardization is critical to the functioning of the system as a whole, especially with the consideration that not all the cooperating parts will be made by the same manufacturer. Specified in ISO 11898, this series of standards has been implemented worldwide and the concepts within extend beyond their original design for automotive applications into other industrial fields.

Intelligent Transport System - ITS

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) standards cover reference model architectures and data formatting. Because of the wide array of different technologies employed in intelligent transport systems, and the necessary smooth interaction between the vehicle, its parts, outside sensors, the network that draws information from those sensors, and the manipulations that occur later makes standardization a key component of the system as a whole.

ANSI Logo

As the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empowers its members and constituents to strengthen the U.S. marketplace position in the global economy while helping to assure the safety and health of consumers and the protection of the environment.
