AIA’s Aerospace & Defense (A&D) Report Details Pandemic’s Impact on the A&D Industries

The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) has released a new report developed in collaboration with IHS Markit that provides insights into the pandemic’s effects on aerospace and defense (A&D) in 2020, and explores steps to recovery. The report, “2021 Facts & Figures: U.S. Aerospace & Defense,” discusses the A&D industry bottom lines and workforce statistics; COVID-19 impacts to the shared supply chain and defense sector; impacts to the civil aviation sector; insights on trade, space commerce; and more. During the pandemic, disruptions in production lines, delayed transportation of materials and goods, and financing challenges accounted for about 64 percent of the 87,000 industry jobs lost.

On the upside, the report also captures the industry’s participation in COVID-19 relief efforts, both nationally and internationally. AIA reports that its member companies have publicly donated at least $500 million to assist the most vulnerable around the world. Additional support has ranged from supplying meals to food-insecure families, providing financial assistance to essential workers, supporting local businesses suffering from loss of revenue, providing laptops to remote learning students, helping local non-profits provide social and financial services in their communities, investing in vaccine and research efforts, and donating medical supplies to protect frontline workers.

“This year’s report details the effects that the COVID-19 had on the A&D industry,” said AIA president and CEO Eric Fanning. “It also provides a glimpse of the positive trends and opportunities that will form the basis of our industry’s growth in a post-pandemic world. Our industry is committed to a full recovery that will support the nation’s security, economy, creation of jobs, and advancements in cutting edge technologies.”
