ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposed New ISO Technical Committee on Sustainable Processes for Wood

As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages its members and relevant stakeholders to submit comments on a proposed new ISO Technical Committee (TC) to develop standards on Sustainable processes for wood and wood-based products. ANSI's deadline for comments on the proposal is June 28, 2019.
ABNT, the national standards body for Brazil, submitted the proposal with the following scope statement:
Standardization in the field of the wood and wood-based industries, including but not limited to sustainability and renewability aspects, chain of custody, timber tracking, and timber measurement, across the entire supply chain from biomass production to the finished wood and wood-based products.
Excluded: those applications covered by ISO/TC 6, Paper, board and pulps; ISO/TC 89, Wood-based panels; ISO/TC 165, Timber structures; ISO/TC 218, Timber; and ISO/TC 207, Environmental management.
This proposal represents a conversion of ISO Project Committee (PC) 278 into a TC with an expanded work program. ISO/PC 278 was previously responsible for the development of ISO 38200: 2018, Chain of custody of wood and wood-based products.
All interested U.S. parties are invited to review the proposal, which includes an initial proposed work plan as well as information on how it may relate to existing international standardization work as well as relevant stakeholders and organizations.

Based on the input received from U.S. stakeholders, a recommended ANSI position and any comments will be developed and presented to the ANSI ISO Committee (AIC) for approval before ISO's August 7 deadline.
ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
