Another Emmy Win! ANSI Congratulates Moving Pictures Experts Group of ISO/IEC JTC 1

11/08/2021

ANSI congratulates the file format subgroup of the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) for achieving another National Academy for Television Arts and Sciences Technology & Engineering Emmy. The group was recognized for its essential contribution to video and audio technology during the 72nd Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards held on November 4, 2021. The Emmy recognizes the achievements of International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission's (ISO/IEC) Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1, Information technology, Subcommittee 29, Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information, which organizesthe file format subgroup of the MPEG Systems.

To date, JTC 1/SC 29’s MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) have achieved seven Emmy Awards thanks to their contributions to the global audiovisual industry.

The latest recognition is for the development of International Standard ISO/IEC 14496-12, Information technology – Coding of audio-visual objects – Part 12: ISO base media file format. The award-winning format provides the structure for time-based media files such as video and audio, which facilitates interchange, management, editing and presentation of the media. Without it, the technology just doesn’t work.

"Once again, ANSI congratulates MPEG subgroup operating under the direction of ISO/IEC JTC 1, Subcommittee 29. We are proud to witness this recognition of how standardization efforts support innovative technologies and impact the greater society," said ANSI president and CEO Joe Bhatia.

Speaking of the technology, Gary Sullivan, chair of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29, noted, “The ISO base media file format has become the bedrock underlying modern media storage and delivery, spanning both local storage and streaming services for music, video and other media.”

“Over 20 years, a small, dedicated set of experts has curated this format, respecting and developing the initial design principles, while being flexible and responsive to the needs of industry, and the result is a format that is still in active adoption and development,” said David Singer, chair of the File Format Subgroup.
