Clean Summit 2020 to Focus on How Science and Innovation Can Support a Healthy Built Environment, with Insights from ANSI Members

7/27/2020
Segments to Cover How Standards, Policies, and Procedures Can Support Built Spaces, amid COVID-19

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages its stakeholders to attend the virtual Clean 2020 Summit, which will include ANSI member presentations on the current state and next steps for guidance and standards, as well as best practices to minimize risk and manage impacts of COVID-19. The virtual event will span three days - August 5, 13 and 25 - with in-depth discussions on the scientific, economic, and social impact of the complex interactions of viral transmission in the built environment. The summit provides an opportunity for thought leaders from business, policy, standards development, and science and engineering to gain a better understanding of current knowledge, and identify opportunities to work together.

A session on August 5, Current State and Next-steps for Guidance and Standards, will provide an overview of the standards, guidance, and regulatory interface landscape, current state of efforts, near-term and long-term strategies, and remaining technical challenges. Presenters will include:

  • Bill Bahnfleth, chair, ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force
  • Amanda Benedict, director of standards, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)
  • Jessica Evans, NSF International
  • Lisa Ng, indoor air quality and ventilation group, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • Justine Parker, American Industrial Hygiene Association
  • Greg Sayles, Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response, Office of Research and Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Don Weekes, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist (ACGIH)

Another session on August 5, Innovations and Emerging Best Practices, will share lessons learned from working to minimize risk and manage the impacts of COVID-19. They will also cover emerging best practices and recommendations for operating in a world with COVID-19. Presenters will include:

  • Gregg Loughman, Athru Consulting
  • Paul Medeiros, NSF International
  • Kristen Omberg and Bill Richmond, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)
  • Monica Schoch-Spana, senior scholar, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

The summit agenda will cover assessing the challenges in returning to routine operations faced by the hospitality, food safety, resort and transportation industries, and a discussion of best practices, data-driven solutions and innovative technologies to help people feel confident and safe in the places where they choose to congregate. The goal is to provide confidence in decontamination practices to support safe and healthy environments, and provide opportunities to transition research into practice to recover from biological contamination and safely return to routine activities.

Furthermore, the summit outcomes aim to:

• Provide a showcase of existing knowledge products and data driven solutions critical to advancing science and engineering solutions essential for economic and social vitality.

• Identify opportunities for collaboration across industry, government and academic stakeholders to rapidly address identified needs and capability gaps.

• Share research with attendees including policy makers, associations, standards organizations and other nonprofits who are working to fund knowledge gaps in response to COVID-19.
