IAPMO and AWWA to Collaborate on Manual for Emergency Shutdown and Startup of Water Systems
ANSI audited designator the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and the American Water Works Association (AWWA), an ANSI accredited standards developer, have entered into a Cooperative Development Agreement to develop of a Manual of Recommended Practice on safe procedures for water systems in the event of an emergency.
Recommended Practices for the Safe Shutdown and Startup of Building Water Systems Due to Emergency will support providing safe and effective water efficiency and water quality provisions for the built environment.
“We’re excited about the agreement to co-develop the Manual of Recommended Practice with AWWA,” IAPMO CEO GP Russ Chaney said. “Both organizations are leaders in developing standards and guidelines pertaining to the safe management of water. This agreement will work to ensure that lessons learned from the horrible COVID-19 pandemic will be captured and put into practice. Considering the profound water scarcity and water quality challenges that both organizations will be confronted with in the years ahead, we suspect that this will be the first of many programs where AWWA and IAPMO will collaborate to provide solutions that work to keep water systems safe.”
“Protecting the water quality in buildings impacted by emergency shutdown actions is a shared area of concern and emphasis for AWWA and IAPMO,” said AWWA senior manager of standards Paul J. Olson. “We are pleased to be a part of this joint effort to provide expert guidance on safe practices to protect public health, which is AWWA’s first core principle.”

ASME Training Session Explores “Engineering Identity”
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, recently held a session for section and division leaders that delved into public perception of engineering and engineers.
Led by Dr. Amy Betz, assistant dean for retention, diversity, and inclusion at Kansas State University, the training session urged attendees to reflect on how they and all engineers may be perceived accurately and inaccurately, and how they could be more inclusive to others. Dr. Betz explored how stereotypes may have negative ramifications such as lost talent in academia and the engineering industry, and encouraged attendees to help change perceptions for a more inclusive engineering workforce.

NEMA to Establish Automotive Component Council
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has announced the launch of its Automotive Component Council (ACC), an initiative to increase manufacturer collaboration in the automotive component market.
As the industry changes and expands with an increase in sensor technology and component electronics, as well as a transition to electric vehicles, the ACC will unite interested stakeholders to foster broader collaboration in the market and support goals including:
- Develop a deeper understanding of the automotive supply chain market
- Advocate for policies and regulations that impact the market
- Develop baseline standards qualification programs
“NEMA and its member companies have thoroughly explored and identified new opportunities in this space,” said NEMA transportation systems division industry director Steve Griffith. “Creating this council provides a great opportunity to establish a venue for collaboration, networking, and partnering with auto manufacturers and their associations on relevant companies. I encourage manufacturing and technology firms to join the ACC in this effort, which encompasses an integral part of the overall automotive sector.”
