Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.
ASTM and IAPMO Sign MOC for Asia-Based Water Sanitation and Hygiene Standards Activity
ASTM International and the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), both ANSI members and audited designators, have signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) to promote collaboration in initiatives that advance public health and safety in Indonesia, the Philippines, and other selected member nations in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Through the MOC, ASTM and IAPMO will collaborate to advance the incorporation of IAPMO model codes and ASTM standards into national technical regulations and related codes Indonesia, the Philippines, and other member nations of ASEAN. They will also increase technical capacity and encourage sustainable solutions for water sanitation and hygiene.

SAE Program Publication Guides Passenger-Initiated Emergency Features for Autonomous Vehicles
The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC), an industry program of SAE Industry Technologies Consortium (SAE ITC), has published a best practice document on how passengers can initiate an emergency stop or call while in a fully autonomous vehicle (AV).
"Passenger-Initiated Emergency Trip Interruption" details how passengers can intervene if they perceive an emergency, and what vehicle actions they can expect as a result. The document strongly advocates for all fleet-managed SAE Level 4 or 5 automated driving-system-dedicated vehicles to have a passenger-initiated emergency stop function and/or a passenger-initiated call function. These features should be noticeably different than other, non-emergency trip interruptions like route changes.
"Much like an emergency stop button or a call button in an elevator, the general public understands that while they don't control the elevator car, they have the ability to stop and ask for help during an emergency situation," said Edward Straub, AVSC executive director. "Riding in an AV should be no different and this best practice provides guidance industry should consider."

ASSP Joins OSHA Ambassador Program
The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has joined The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Ambassador Program, which serves to improve workplace health and safety.
The collaborative relationship between the two organizations, strengthened through this program, will facilitate the sharing and dissemination of occupational safety and health data and guidance.
"Organizations with common objectives can make better progress by working together and sharing resources," said Diana Stegall, ASSP president. "Since the establishment of OSHA nearly 50 years ago, we have built a strong bond by working closely on several projects and sharing expertise when needed. Many OSHA employees are ASSP members and participate on our technical committees."
