IEEE's Engineering360 Features Interview with ANSI President and CEO S. Joe Bhatia

10/14/2019

In advance of World Standards Week 2019 in November, ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia spoke with David Wagman, editorial director of IEEE's publication, Engineering360, to discuss challenges and opportunities that the standardization community faces in light of the rapid acceleration of technology. Mr. Bhatia highlighted several ways in which standards and conformity assessment activities are at the forefront of changefrom ANSI's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Standardization Collaborative (UASSC) to ANSI's work with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to explore machine learning technologies, and more.

In the interview, Bhatia notes how engagement from multiple standards developing organizations and other experts is crucial at a time when emerging technologies that support artificial intelligence, virtual reality, drones, and advanced manufacturing have a profound impact on the way we live and work.

"Today, standards need to respond and evolve faster than ever," Mr. Bhatia said. "But because of highly dynamic systems across the globe that introduce new players and technologies, there's a lot of complexity. The strength of the U.S. system is that it is market driven. As compared to many other countries who use a top-down system managed by government, the U.S. system is private-sector-led and characterized by a consensus-based standards development process that involves all affected stakeholders, including industry, government, consumers and others. This holistic approach works well and enables a responsive and flexible system that supports innovation."

World Standards Week, held on November 4-8 in Washington, DC, will feature meetings and events designed to inspire open dialogue about standardization, conformity assessment, and workforce development priorities.

Registration for all WSW 2019 events is now open, and more information can be found at www.ansi.org/wsweek.
