Engineers Australia has announced that Dr. Bronwyn Evans will be the new Chief Executive Officer of its engineering peak body, effective October 3, 2019.

Former CEO of Standards Australia, Dr. Evans previously held senior executive roles at Cochlear Ltd and GE Healthcare, and has board experience in the construction, medical technology, and digital business sectors.

Dr. Evans completes three years as founding chair of MTPConnect, a part of Australia's Growth Centres initiative, and has also served as Vice President, Finance of the International Organization for Standardization.

"An electrical engineer who has led successful corporations across manufacturing, construction, research and standards-setting, Dr Evans is well-placed to lead our organisation into its next chapter as the engineering profession transitions to take advantage of the technological disruptions and innovation of the future," said Trish White, National President and Board Chair of Engineers Australia.

USP, a member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced two additions to its senior staff.

Mary Backstrom has been appointed USP's vice president, global biologics. In this role, Ms. Backstrom leads the organization's strategic marketing and program operations for quality standards for biological medicines.

Prior to joining USP, Ms. Backstrom was Parexel International's vice president of marketing strategy and insights. There, she oversaw the launch of innovative growth strategies and the development of high impact research and analytics programs. She has also consulted in the life sciences industry, and served in a number of global leadership roles at ConvaTec.

"Biologics - such as recombinant therapeutic proteins, vaccines, blood components, tissues, cell, and gene therapies - are growing faster than any other segment of medicine," said Dr. Salah Kivlighn, USP senior vice president, global strategic marketing and program operations. "Mary Backstrom's leadership will help ensure that USP's quality standards can continue to serve as a foundation for a robust safety network for biological medicines."

Michael Purcell has joined USP as vice president, chemical medicines. In this position, Mr. Purcell oversees USP's strategic marketing and program operations for chemical medicines reference standards.

Previously, Mr. Purcell was vice president of strategy and corporate development for J M Smith Corporation, South Carolina's third largest privately held corporation, where he led the development and execution of strategic plans and growth initiatives. He has also owned a consulting practice, and worked in management positions for Danaher Corporation, General Electric, Milliken & Company, and DuPont.

"Safeguarding the quality of medication is fundamental to protecting the public's health, especially as ingredients and products come from all over the world," said Dr. Kivlighn. "Michael Purcell's vast experience with strategy and corporate development will help USP build on our leadership in this area to make an even larger impact in medicines quality and health worldwide."
