People on the Move highlights the career advancements of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced that Ian Deakin joined the organization as principal technologist. In this role, he will work to advance ATIS initiatives in the areas of DLT and 5G vertical enablement platforms.

Mr. Deakin brings with him 30 years of experience in the ICT industry, most recently at innov8id, where he worked with executives to guide organizations in using blockchain technology to facilitate change, optimize performance, and create new business models. He has held senior management positions with iconectiv, CMG Telecom, Motorola, O2, and Siemens Nixdorf. Mr. Deakin also contributed to ATIS's initiative to devise and deliver a solution using DLT to help combat fraudulent/spoofed telephone calls, and has filed three patents in the ICT area.

"Ian's extensive experience in leading innovation, change management, and developing robust technology strategies will be a strong asset to our technical bench," said ATIS president and CEO Susan Miller. "We welcome him and look forward to putting his expertise into helping our members evaluate and advance new opportunities inherent in our transforming industry."

SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has appointed John Whalen as director of technical services. In this role, he and his team will handle SSPC committees and standards development, oversight of the SSPC QP programs, and the development and revision of training and certification programs.

Prior to joining SSPC, Mr. Whalen was technical director at Watson Standard/Sherwin-Williams, where he oversaw long-term R&D as well as short-term product development. Previously, he was with DNP Imagingcomm America Corporation as their TTR solutions engineer, managing product development and international technology transfer of new products. He has also worked with Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation, Spartech Corporation, The Valspar Corporation, Sony Chemicals, and PPG Industries. Mr. Whalen has volunteered for RadTech International, TAPPI, SPE, and FSCT/ACA, and holds two patents.

"We conducted an extensive search for the director of technical services position and interviewed several outstanding candidates," said Bill Worms, SSPC executive director. "John really stood out from the pack, and his background as a coatings expert strengthens the capabilities of our team. We're excited to have him here!"
