10/02/2020

People on the Move highlights the career advancements of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

IAPMO, a member and audited designator of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has named Dave Viola its new CEO. Mr. Viola will assume the position on January 1, 2021, taking over for GP Russ Chaney, who is retiring after a quarter-century at the helm of the 95-year-old association. IAPMO will continue to benefit from Chaney’s leadership skills and experience as an executive adviser to the CEO.

Mr. Viola has been with IAPMO since 2007, serving as COO for the past seven years with strategic and operational responsibility for IAPMO’s programs and services. He has more than 25 years of senior management experience in the plumbing and mechanical industry, previously serving as technical director for the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute and as a staff engineer for BOCA International and the International Code Council (ICC).

Mr. Viola was the vice chair of ANSI’s Accreditation Committee for Product Certifiers in 2004. He also serves or has served on numerous industry committees including the executive board of the World Plumbing Council, the ASME A112 Committee on Plumbing, the board of ASTM International, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Reinvent the Toilet Technical Advisory Committee.

“Dave Viola possesses a unique ability to strategize, to create a vision, and implement the steps necessary to achieve that vision,” Mr. Chaney said. “I will enjoy watching Dave continue to build upon the success that he has exhibited throughout his entire tenure at The IAPMO Group.”

BIFMA, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has announced several changes to its leadership.

Deirdre Jimenez has been named the organization’s first president and CEO. In this role, she will lead the organization in connecting and advancing the common interests of the business and industrial furniture manufacturers industry. She succeeds Thomas Reardon, who has retired after 22 years as BIFMA executive director.

Ms. Jimenez brings with her over 25 years of leadership experience in corporate real estate and national AE consulting firms, in both executive and ownership roles. She has spent many years of her career focused on the workplace environment, and is a registered architect in several states. Ms. Jimenez has earned the NCIDQ certification and has won numerous professional industry awards.

“Deirdre’s strategic drive and her distinguished career in workplace architecture and design make her the perfect choice to lead BIFMA in support of the industry,” said Hank Menke, BIFMA’s board chair. “We’re thrilled to welcome Deirdre aboard.”

Brad Miller will retire from BIFMA at the end of 2020, concluding 26 years with the organization.

Mr. Miller has held many titles at BIFMA, including manager of government affairs, director of communications and government affairs, and director of advocacy and sustainability. He was the organization’s first official lobbyist, and helped to develop its website. Mr. Miller was also the editor of BIFMA’s newsletter and pioneered the organization’s social media presence. He led the establishment of the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard, working with NSF International and hundreds of stakeholders to release the document for industry use in 2008. Subsequently, this standard was used in the LEVEL Certification Program, which has certified more than 4,300 products and been recommended or required in specifications around the world.

Mr. Miller plans to remain connected to BIFMA and the industry, consulting for BIFMA and being active on community boards and advisory groups for his many areas of interest. BIFMA is seeking to fill the position of director of health and sustainability; see their website for the job description and information on how to apply.

The American Wood Council (AWC), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has appointed Jackson Morrill as its new president and CEO. He succeeds Robert Glowinski, who will retire at the end of 2020 after 10 years as AWC’s president and CEO.

Mr. Morrill joins AWC after serving as president of the Composite Panel Association (CPA). He has more than 20 years of experience as a lawyer and trade association representative working on environmental, sustainability, industry standards and testing, and other issues. Previously, he worked with the American Chemistry Council (ACC), practiced environmental law at Beveridge & Diamond, and was an environmental law consultant at World Bank.

“Jackson’s background shows him to be an outstanding choice to lead the industry and further leverage the unique aspects of wood products. Our selection committee was equally impressed by his demonstrated leadership, demeanor, and outlook," said AWC board chair Neil Sherman. “And I can confidently speak for all of AWC’s membership in thanking Bob for working tirelessly for many years on behalf of the industry. He was the association’s first president and CEO, and it’s under his leadership that a fledgling association has truly grown to be the voice of the wood products industry.”
