Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Model-Based Enterprises to Credentialing for Healthcare Suppliers

6/14/2019

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Supplier representatives are frequent visitors to healthcare facilities, so it is crucial for the health and safety of patients and healthcare employees to check representatives' background and credentials, before they receive access and clearances. The credentialing process can be lengthy, waste resources, and even be inaccurate if not conducted appropriately. NEMA has developed a new standard that supports the efforts of healthcare providers and their suppliers to identify the credentials of supplier representatives. ANSI/NEMA SC 1-2019, Supplier Credentialing in Healthcare, describes specialized requirements for credentialing in the healthcare environment, offering guidance in areas including criminal background checks, medical testing and vaccinations, drug screens, and applicable training.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, represents nearly 325 electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers that make safe, reliable, and efficient products and systems serving several major markets. NEMA promotes the competitiveness of the U.S. electrical product industry through the development of standards, advocacy in federal and state legislatures and executive agencies, and the collection and analysis of economic data.
