Determination of the fogging characteristics of trim materials in the interior of automobiles

This test as described in this document is a method of determining the fogging characteristics of materials used within the passenger compartment of motor vehicles.*Fogging is the condensation of evaporated volatile components from the interior of automobiles onto the automobile glass panes, especially on the windscreen. The test in accordance with this standard is intended for determination of the fogging characteristics of materials used in the occupant department of automobiles. The method can also be used for fluid, paste, powder and solid raw materials the materials consist of or from which they are manufactured. The standard provides two methods for determination of the fogging characteristics: measurement of the reflectometric values measured at 60° on a glass plate upon which volatile components condensate from the specimen or sample (method A), and gravimetric determination of condensable components (method B). With respect to the previous edition from 1992, within the framework of this standard, the cleaning method for the glass plates has been revised, a change to borosilicate glass plates has been made and DIPD has been specified as reference compound instead of DOP. The standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 054-04-04 AA "Kunststoff-Folien und kunststoffbeschichtete Flächengebilde (Kunstleder); allgemeine Eigenschaften" ("Plastic films and plastics-coated fabrics (artificial leather); general characteristics") of the Plastics Standards Committee (FNK).
