Establishes a structure for the assignment of identifying data codes to locational entities in the United States and its outlying and associated areas, for the purpose of information interchange among data-processing systems. Types of locational entities for which this strucutre is intended include (but are not limited to) populated places, primary county divisions such as townships and New England towns, Indian reservations, and facilities such as airports and military bases. This standard also establishes requirements for associated data that improve the utility of the primary data codes.
