Aircraft Quality Steel

Aircraft quality steel particle testing standards are published by SAE. These documents cover steel bars, forgings, and steel cleanliness in different metals such as steel. These documents also cover test methods for double vacuum melted materials, electroslag remelted materials, and magnetic particles.

SAE AMS 6492B-2018

Steel Bars, Forgings, and Tubing, 1.0Cr - 3.25Ni - 0.40Mo (0.17 - 0.22C), Aircraft Quality

This specification covers an aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock.

SAE AMS 6498B-2019

Steel Bars, Forgings, and Tubing, Nitriding, 1.4Cr - 1.2Mo - 0.3V (0.29 - 0.36C), Double Vacuum Melted, Premium Aircraft-Quality for Bearing Applications

This specification covers a nitriding grade of premium aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock. AMS6496 and AMS6497 cover UNS K23280 with other quality levels.

SAE AMS 6256C-2002 (SAE AMS6256C-2002)

Steel, Bars, Forgings, and Tubing 1.0cr 3.0ni 4.5mo 0.08al 0.38v (0.10-0.16c) Premium Aircraft-Quality, Double Vacuum Melted (Cancelled: Jan 2002)

This specification has been declared "NONCURRENT" by the Aerospace Materials Division, SAE, as of September 1996. It is recommended, therefore, that this specification not be specified for new designs. Primarily for critical carburized parts, such as bearings, gears, and shafts, requiring high minimum core hardness with narrow range, superior resistance to elevated temperature up to 800 degrees F (425 degrees C), and subject to very rigid magnetic particle inspection standards.

SAE AMS 2304C-2020

Steel Cleanliness, Special Aircraft-Quality Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in inch/pound units for special aircraft-quality ferromagnetic steels, including hardenable corrosion resistant steels, by magnetic particle inspection methods. This specification contains sampling, sample preparation, inspection procedures and cleanliness rating criteria (see 8.2). 1.1.1 The metric version, MAM2304, has been cancelled. The SI units have been included in this specification, but the inch/pound units are primary (see 8.7).

SAE AMS 2303F-2010 (SAE AMS2303F-2010)

Steel Cleanliness, Aircraft Quality Martensitic Corrosion-Resistant Steels, Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in inch/pound units for aircraft-quality, ferro-magnetic, hardenable corrosion-resistant steels as determined by magnetic particle inspection methods. This specification contains sampling, specimen preparation, and inspection procedures and cleanliness rating criteria. The metric version, MAM 2303, has been cancelled. The SI units have been included in this specification, but the inch-pound units are primary. This procedure has been used typically for the cleanliness evaluation of blooms, billets, tube rounds, stock for forging or flash welded rings, slabs, bars, sheet, strip, plate, tubing, and extrusions used in fabricating parts subject to magnetic particle inspection, but may be used for qualification of a heat, melt, or lot of steel.

SAE AMS 2301L-2020

Steel Cleanliness, Aircraft Quality Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in inch/pound units for aircraft-quality ferro-magnetic steels, other than hardenable corrosion resistant steels (refer to AMS2303), by magnetic particle inspection methods. This specification contains sampling, specimen preparation, inspection procedures and cleanliness rating criteria (see 8.5).

SAE AMS 2300M-2020

Steel Cleanliness, Premium Aircraft-Quality Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in inch/pound units for premium aircraft-quality ferromagnetic steels, including hardenable, corrosion-resistant steels, by magnetic particle inspection methods. This specification contains sampling, sample preparation, inspection procedures and cleanliness rating criteria (see 8.2).

SAE MAM 2304C-2007 (SAE MAM2304C-2007)

Steel Cleanliness, Special Aircraft-Quality Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure Metric (SI) Measurement (Cancelled: Jun 2007)

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in metric SI units for special aircraft-quality ferromagnetic steels, other than hardenable corrosion resistant steels, by magnetic particle inspection methods.

SAE MAM 2303E-2007 (SAE MAM2303E-2007)

Steel Cleanliness, Aircraft Quality, Martensitic Corrosion-Resistant Steels, Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure, Metric (SI) Measurement (Cancelled: Jul 2007)

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in SI (Metric) units for aircraft-quality, ferromagnetic, hardenable, corrosion-resistant steels as determined by magnetic particle inspection methods. This specification contains sampling, specimen preparation, and inspection procedures and cleanliness rating criteria.

SAE MAM 2301C-2007 (SAE MAM2301C-2007)

Steel Cleanliness, Aircraft Quality Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure Metric (SI) Measurement (Cancelled: Jun 2007)

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in SI (metric) units for aircraft-quality ferromagnetic steels, other than hardenable corrosion-resistant steels, by magnetic particle inspection methods.

SAE MAM 2300D-2007 (SAE MAM2300D-2007)

Steel Cleanliness, Premium Aircraft-Quality Magnetic Particle Inspection Procedure, Metric (SI) Measurement (Cancelled: Jun 2007)

This specification covers steel cleanliness requirements in metric (SI) units for premium aircraft-quality ferromagnetic steels, other than hardenable, corrosion-resistant steels, by magnetic particle inspection methods.
