Through the new captioned course, An Introduction to Standards: Why, where, and how are they developed, learn how different types of standards support various industries, products, and make modern conveniences possible.

The 35-minute complimentary course, updated in 2021, provides a broad overview of the organizations and experts involved in standards development. The session also covers how ANSI coordinates and facilitates the standardization process.

The module focuses on key fundamental lessons:

 • What are standards?
o Key definitions and terms, and types of standards

ANSI's role in U.S. standardization
o American National Standard (ANS) development process
o Accreditation of standards developers

ANSI's role in international standardization
o ISO and IEC roles
o Responsibilities of Technical Committees (TCs), Subcommittees (SCs), and Working Groups (WGs)
o Different types of committee membership
o Other international standardization relationships

The course is part of ANSI's array of training courses on various aspects of the standardization system, from an informational overview of standards and their development, to specific skills and strategies for domestic and international participants.

ANSI is in the process of adding captioned versions of other courses in the near future.
