The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has appointed UCOR president and CEO Ken Rueter to serve a three-year term on the board as the Society’s public director – a position created in 2015 to gain a corporate perspective from outside the occupational safety and health profession.
For over three decades, Rueter has led all aspects of site cleanup and remediation, radioactive waste treatment and project integration, including construction and risk management. He previously served as president of Savannah River Remediation LLC, project manager for the Savannah River Liquid Waste Project, and chief operating officer for the Hanford Tank Operations Contract in Washington State, among other leadership positions.
“Ken’s leadership and business expertise will help inform our decisions, especially given his track record of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion,” said ASSP president Deborah Roy. “His commitment to workplace safety is respected across the industry, and he brings a business acumen and a strategic mindset as we move to a future focus.”
Effective July 1, Rueter becomes only the third person to serve as ASSP public director since the position was created six years ago, replacing former Alaska Tanker CEO Anil Mathur, whose term ended on June 30.
The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute, has announced two additions and one promotion within their staff.
Alan Serven is SAAMI’s new senior director of technical affairs. He comes to the organization from the Remington Arms Company, where he spent 25 years contributing his technical knowledge in a variety of roles. Serven has served on SAAMI committees and has experience in the design, manufacture, and testing of smokeless propellant, small arms ammunition, and sporting rifles.
Brian Osowiecki has been promoted to director of regulatory affairs. In this role, he will lead the organization’s efforts related to regulatory compliance, coordinating committee work on shipping, packaging, and logistical matters working with the SAAMI Logistics and Regulatory Affairs Committee. Previously, Osowiecki was SAAMI’s manager of technical and regulatory affairs, and he has also worked in compliance at Smith & Wesson. He is an active reservist in the Connecticut Army National Guard, and spent some of the pandemic period on active duty supporting the response to the coronavirus.
Alexander “Nico” Wirtz has been appointed director of technical affairs for SAAMI. Wirtz has consulted for Fortune 500 companies for over 10 years, and served as a consultant to SAAMI prior to joining the organization. He has experience in coalition building and strategic communications, as well as an in-depth understanding of the structures and processes of international organizations, European governments, and NGOs.
