Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: From Secure Mobile Transactions to Nuclear Facility Sites


In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Framework for Secure Mobile Transactions

The rise of the mobile device has made staying connected while on the go possible. From shooting an email while commuting or responding to a quick text while out around town, mobile devices have made communicating easy and instant. Mobile devices have also transformed the way we shop. It is easier than ever to initiate and complete a purchase directly from your mobile device. However, it is important that the financial information passed through our mobile devices remains secure. An American National Standard (ANS) on framework for secure mobile transactions has been developed by Accredited Standards Committee X9 Inc., an ANSI-accredited standards developer.

ANSI X9.134-1-2020, Core Banking: Mobile Financial Services - General Framework, provides a flexible framework to accommodate new mobile device technologies as well as to allow various business models. At the same time, it enables compliance with applicable regulations including data privacy, protection of personally identifiable data, consumer protection, anti-money laundering, and prevention of financial crime.

Seismic Hazard Assessments of Nuclear Facility Sites

According to the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, one-third of the U.S. population lives or works within 50 miles of a nuclear power plant. For the nuclear sites in areas in which earthquakes are a risk, it is important to public safety to plan ahead to assess and mitigate associated risks. An ANS on assessing seismic hazards to nuclear facilities has been developed by the American Nuclear Society (ANS), an ANSI-accredited standards developer.

ANSI/ANS-2.27-2020, Criteria For Investigations Of Nuclear Facility Sites For Seismic Hazard Assessments, provides criteria and guidelines for conducting geological, seismological, geophysical, and geotechnical investigations. These investigations provide information to support seismic source characterization input to a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), the evaluation of tectonic permanent ground deformation hazard, site response analysis input to PSHAs, nontectonic earthquake-induced ground failure hazard, and foundation stability.
