Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Safe Walking Surfaces to Automotive Glazing Materials

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:
Glazing Materials in Motor Vehicles
The makeup of glass or window components of a car or other automobile varies depending on their placement in the vehicle: laminated glass is used for the windshield, and tempered glass is used for side window, the rear window, and the sunroof. Along with wire glass and rigid plastic, these products are called glazing materials, and they are chosen and tested extensively for their performance and the safety of drivers and passengers. SAE J 3097Z26-2019, Standard for Safety Glazing Materials for Glazing Motor Vehicles and Motor Vehicle Equipment Operating on Land Highways - Safety Standard, is a new guideline developed by SAE International specific to glazing materials for vehicles being driven on highways, including passenger cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and motorhomes.
SAE, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, is a global association of engineers and related technical experts working in aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries. Their work includes voluntary consensus standards development as well as charitable initiatives through the SAE Foundation.
