OPEI is the advocacy voice of the industry, and a recognized Standards Development Organization for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and active internationally through the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Standards Organization (ISO) — where it serves as the administrator of the U.S. TAGs (United States Technical Advisory Group) to two subcommittees to ISO/TC 23 (International Organization for Standardization/Technical Committee) — in the development of safety and performance standards. ANSI/OPEI 60335-2-107-2020

Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-107: Particular requirements for robotic battery powered electrical lawnmowers

This document specifies safety requirements and their verification for the design and construction of robotic battery powered electrical rotary lawnmowers and their peripherals with the rated voltage of the battery being not more than 75 V d.c. EMC and environmental aspects, except noise have not been considered in this standard. This document does not apply to the additional risks associated with internal combustion engine(s), hybrid and fuel cell powered machines and associated charging systems. This document deals with all the significant hazards presented by battery powered robotic lawnmowers and their peripherals when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable. Throughout this document, the term machine is used to refer to the robotic lawnmower, separate from its charging station. This document also provides requirements for the safety of mains powered charging stations and signal sources for perimeter delimiters. Additional battery operation and charging requirements for robotic lawnmowers, including the charging of lithium ion batteries, are specified in Annex KK which replaces Annexes B and S (except for requirements for non-rechargeable batteries) of Part 1.


ANSI/OPEI B175.3-2019

Outdoor Power Equipment - Internal Combustion Engine-Powered Hand-Held Grass Trimmers and Brushcutters - Safety and Environmental Requirements

The requirements of this Standard apply to: a) Internal combustion engine–powered, hand-held, grass trimmers intended for use with flexible nonmetallic line, or other types of nonmetallic cutting attachments, and b) Internal combustion engine–powered, hand-held, brushcutters intended for use with cutting blades and other cutting attachments. NOTE – If a grass trimmer is marketed by the manufacturer as convertible to a brushcutter, then the converted unit shall comply with requirements for brushcutters and vice-versa. A convertible unit may be marketed as a grass trimmer or a brushcutter without including the devices required for conversion in the packaging, provided the operator manual clearly addresses the need to acquire and use the required conversion devices and the manufacturer makes such devices available as optional equipment.

Commercial Turf Care Equipment - Safety Specifications

The safety specifications given in this standard are for powered (a) pedestrian-controlled machines, (b) ride-on machines and (c) implements for use with pedestrian and ride-on machines intended for marketing as commercial turf care equipment and that are customarily used by hired operators. Equipment covered may consist of two or more components that are functionally connected and may be produced by different manufacturers. Specific requirements are established in the standard for reel, rotary, and flail mowers as well as power rakes because of their prevalence, but this standard is intended to apply to all types of commercial turf care equipment. Each functional component shall conform to each section of this standard as it logically applies. Additionally, this standard applies to all aftermarket parts, attachments and accessories. Any manufacturer of aftermarket parts, attachments, implements, and accessories is responsible for ensuring compliance to this standard. Safety specifications in this standard apply only to a configuration of attachments, implements, and accessories approved by their respective manufacturers.

Outdoor Power Equipment - Internal Combustion Engine-Powered Handheld and Backpack Blowers and Blower-Vacuums - Safety Requirements and Performance Testing Procedures

The requirements of this standard apply to handheld and backpack internal combustion engine-powered blowers and blower-vacuums. This standard does not apply to ride-on, towed, or walk-behind units. This standard does not apply to electrically powered units.

Consumer Turf Care Equipment - Pedestrian-Controlled Mowers and Ride-On Mowers - Safety Specifications

The safety specifications given in this standard are for powered (a) reel and rotary pedestrian-controlled lawn mowers, (b) reel and rotary ride-on lawn mowers, (c) ride-on lawn tractors with mower attachments, (d) ride-on lawn and garden tractors with mower attachments, and (e) lever-steer and zero-turn ride-on mowers. These specifications are intended to provide safety requirements and to help ensure uniform operator environments. They are intended to apply to products specifically intended as consumer products for the personal use of a consumer around a house.


ANSI/OPEI B175.7-2019

Outdoor Power Equipment - Internal Combustion Engine-Powered Hand-Held Pole Mounted Pruners - Safety and Environmental Requirements

This standard gives safety requirements and measures for their verification for the design and construction of portable, hand-held, pole-mounted pruners, including extendable and telescopic units, having an integral combustion engine as their power head and using a drive shaft to transmit power to a cutting attachment consisting of a saw chain, a reciprocating blade, or single-piece circular saw blade with a 205 mm (8.1 in) maximum outside diameter. Methods for the elimination or reduction of hazards arising from the use of these units and the type of information on safe working practices to be provided by the manufacturer are specified.


ANSI/OPEI B71.10-2018

Off-Road Ground-Supported Outdoor Power Equipment - Gasoline Fuel Systems - Performance Specifications and Test Procedures

This standard describes safety specifications and test procedures applicable to the gasoline fuel systems for off-road ground-supported outdoor power equipment with spark ignition engines of less than one liter displacement. Off-road ground-supported outdoor power equipment for which this standard may apply include walk-behind and riding lawn-mowers, snow throwers, powered log splitters, shredders/grinders and tillers. The effective implementation date of this standard shall be two (2) years after the publication date and shall apply to all products built after that date. Manufacturers may also comply with the requirements of this standard anytime after the publication date. NOTE – The tests described in this standard involve the use of hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.


ANSI/OPEI B71.9-2016

Multipurpose Off-Highway Utility Vehicles

This standard establishes requirements for equipment, configuration, and performance of Multipurpose Off-Highway Utility Vehicles (MOHUVs). A MOHUV has features specifically intended for utility use and has the following characteristics: 1) intended to transport a person(s) and/or cargo, with a top speed in excess of 25 mph (40.2 km/h); 2) 2030 mm (80 in) or less in overall width; 3) designed to travel on four or more wheels, two or four tracks, or combinations of four or more tracks and wheels; 4) using a steering wheel for steering control; 5) with a non-straddle seat; 6) with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of no more than 1814 kg (4000 lb), and 7) with a minimum cargo capacity of 159 kg (350 lb).
