Door Trimming Standards

Door standards from the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association address a range of features and characteristics of doors. Covering door controls, hanging, locking, trimming, power assist, and other standards, this set comes together to provide a comprehensive toolkit for manufacturers to create hardware that designers and users can depend on with a focus on reliability and interoperability. These standards are related to cabinet trim, architectural trim, gasketing, and thresholds.

ANSI/BHMA A156.6-2021

Standard for Architectural Door Trim

This Standard contains requirements for door protection plates, door and wall edgings, push plates, door pulls, push and pull bars, and vertical rod covers and guards. Included are strength, dimensional, and material criteria plus environmental performance.

ANSI/BHMA A156.9-2020

Cabinet Hardware

This Standard contains requirements for cabinet hardware and includes hinges, knobs, pulls, catches, shelf rests, standards and brackets, drawer slides, rotating shelves and track with guides for sliding panels. Included are performance tests covering operational, cyclical, strength, and finish criteria.

ANSI/BHMA A156.11-2024

Standard for Cabinet Locks

This standard establishes requirements for locks used on cabinets. These enclosures are accessed via doors or drawers. Cycle tests, operational tests, and strength tests are included. Tests described in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results vary because of the material used in the installation, maintenance, and environmental conditions. Tests to evaluate decorative and protective finishes for these products are described in ANSI/BHMA A156.18 for Materials and Finishes and are required to complete certification. Grade Qualifications Two classifications of tests are described in this Standard, Operational and Security. Manufacturers shall indicate the Grade level. A Grade 1 product shall meet all Grade 1 criteria, a Grade 2 product shall meet all Grade 2 criteria, and a Grade 3 product shall meet all Grade 3 criteria in each classification.

ANSI/BHMA A156.16-2023

Standard for Auxiliary Hardware

This Standard establishes requirements for auxiliary hardware and includes performance tests covering operational, cyclical, and strength. Tests described in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results vary because of installation, maintenance and environmental conditions. Tests to evaluate decorative and protective finishes for these products are described in ANSI/BHMA A156.18 for Materials and Finishes and are required to complete certification.

ANSI/BHMA A156.21-2025

Standard for Thresholds

Establishes requirements for thresholds. Types are described with identifying numbers. Strength tests, fastening systems, and gasketing tests are included. Tests described or referenced in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual use, results vary because of installation, maintenance, and environmental conditions.

ANSI/BHMA A156.22-2021

Standard for Gasketing

This Standard establishes requirements for the performance and installation of gasketing systems including intumescents applied to, or mortised to, doors, frames or both. Included are performance tests intended to evaluate resistance to smoke and air infiltration, energy performance, and the life and durability of gasketing materials.
