Conveyor Safety Standards

Conveyor safety standards address safety considerations in design, testing, and use, doing so with a focus beyond other standards that primarily address proper functioning with safety as an indirect result as proper functioning is of course safe functioning. These conveyor standards focus specifically on safety.

Additionally, significant attention is paid to fire safety, with fire simulation flammability testing and fire resistance tests taking the spotlight.

ASME B20.1-2021

Conveyor belts. Drum friction testing (British Standard)

ISO 20238:2018 specifies a method of testing to determine the propensity of a conveyor belt to generate heat flame or glow when held stationary, under a given tension, in surface contact around a rotating driven steel drum. ISO 20238:2018 describes means of varying the conveyor belt tension. NOTE For conveyor belts containing steel reinforcement, it may not be possible to conduct this test in full due to the inability of the conveyor belt to comply with the requirements of 7.2. In this case, premature termination according to 7.3 can be necessary.

Fire resistance tests for service installations. Conveyor systems and their closures (British Standard)

This part of EN 1634 specifies a method for determining the fire resistance of conveyor systems shutter (CSS) assemblies designed for installation within openings incorporated in vertical and/or horizontal separating elements, including the necessary sealing measures, if the conveyor systems shutters (CSS) are penetrated by parts of the conveyor tracks, by electrical cables or by pneumatic pipes.

ISO 15236-3:2017

Steel cord conveyor belts - Part 3: Special safety requirements for belts for use in underground installations

ISO 15236-3:2017 specifies the performance and constructional requirements applicable to conveyor belts for underground mining having steel cords in the longitudinal direction as reinforcement. The requirements for design and construction apply to the design of single belts, as well as the design of complete type series such as those covered in ISO 15236 2. Steel cord belts in accordance with this document are intended for use underground in coal mines and in other applications where the highest demands for safety against fire and explosion hazards have to be complied with. NOTE At present, the requirements can only be met by the use of compounds based on chloroprene rubber for the covers, as well as for the bonding rubber.

Continuous mechanical handling equipment - Safety code for screw conveyors - Examples of guards for trapping and shearing points

Gives examples of the kinds of hazards associated with screw conveyors at danger points, in particular trapping and shearing points located between the moving screw and the fixed parts of the conveyor or surrounding structures. Describes different safety devices, illustrated by examples of design sheets, capable of meeting the general safety requirements.

Underground mining machinery. Specification for the safety requirements of armoured face conveyors (British Standard)

1.1 This European Standard specifies the safety requirements for armoured face conveyors and covers, conveyor drive units, return units, line pans, chain assemblies, devices for tensioning and locking chains. This European Standard does not apply to stage loader ancillaries, armoured face conveyors which form part of mineral bunker systems or operate as spillage conveyors, to haulage systems and guides utilised by extraction machines, to the technical requirements for cable-less remote controls, to compressed air powered machines, or to the interfaces between the elements of the conveyor and other machine installations. Armoured face conveyors are designed for the transport of minerals and rock only. NOTE Armoured face conveyors can be used as a base for guiding the extraction machine and as a link between the face roof support and the extraction machine if required. This European Standard deals with all hazards, hazardous situations and events for the use in mines, when they are used as intended and for the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer. See clause 4 for the hazards dealt with. 1.2 This European Standard does not cover any hazards resulting from the electrical equipment associated with the machine. It does not contain any requirements relating to dust suppression or firedamp hazards. Hazards due to noise are also excluded from this European Standard, but a separate European Standard is in preparation where hazards due to noise will be addressed. It is intended for manufacturers producing and marketing complete machines, and for manufacturers assembling new parts from different origins or assembling new machines even for their own use. These are called "manufacturers" in this European Standard. 1.3 This European Standard applies to armoured face conveyors which are manufactured after the date of issue of this European Standard.

BS EN 12881-1:2014

Conveyor belts. Fire simulation flammability testing. Propane burner tests (British Standard)

EN 12881-1 describes four methods for measuring the propagation of a flame along a conveyor belt which has been exposed to a relatively high localized heat source such as a fire. The damage suffered by the conveyor belt, as well as its tendency to support combustion, is measured by observing the extent to which the fire spreads along the test piece. Method A uses a test piece 2 m in length and consumes propane gas through the burner at the rate of (1,30 0,05) kg per 10 min. Method B uses a test piece 2,5 m in length and consumes propane gas through two burners mounted above and below the test piece trestle at the rate of (1,30 0,05) kg per 10 min for each burner. Method C uses a test piece 1,5 m in length and consumes propane gas through the burner at the rate of (565 10) g per 50 min. Method D uses a test piece 1,2 m in length and consumes propane gas through the burner at the rate of 150 l/hr (D1) or 190 l/hr (D2).
