Slotted (Castellated) Hex Nuts

These standards from ANSI, ASME, ISO, SAE, and others address the materials, construction, and requirements for hex nuts for a variety of applications. This list addresses slotted or castellated Hex Nuts.

ASME B18.2.4.3M-1979 (R2017)

Metric Slotted Hex Nuts (B18.2.4.3M - 1979)

This Standard covers the general and dimensional data for metric slotted hex nuts recognized as American National Standard. The inclusion of dimensional data in this Standard is not intended to imply that all of the nut sizes in conjunction with the various options described herein are stock items. Purchasers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production slotted hex nuts.

This International Standard specifies the dimensions of hexagon slotted (castellated) nuts, normal height, normal across flats, with MJ threads, of classifications: 600 MPa 1) /120 C 2) , 600 MPa 1) /235 C 2) , 900 MPa 1) /425 C 2) , 1100MPa 1) 235 C 2) , 1100 MPa 1) /315 C 2) , 1100 MPa 1) 650 C 2) , 1210 MPa 1) 730 C 2) , 1 250 MPa 1) /235 C 2) and 1550 MPa 1) 600 C 2) . These nuts are intended to be used with split pins in conformity with ISO 1234. This International Standard is only applicable for the compilation of aerospace product standards. 1) Corresponds to the minimum tensile stress which the nut is able to withstand at ambient temperature without breaking or cracking when tested with a bolt of a higher strength class. 2) Maximum temperature that the nut is able to withstand, without permanent alteration to its original characteristics, after ambient temperature has been restored. The maximum temperature is conditioned by the material or by the surface treatment.

ISO 9216:2002

Aerospace - Nuts, hexagonal, slotted (castellated), for pulleys, in alloy steel and cadmium plated or in corrosion-resistant steel and passivated - Dimensions and masses

ISO 9216:2002 specifies the characteristics of nuts, hexagonal, slotted/castellated, of reduced height and reduced width across flats, in alloy steel and cadmium plated (classification 900 MPa/235 C) or in corrosion-resistant steel and passivated (classification 900 MPa/450 C). ISO 9216:2002 is applicable to nuts used with ISO 9219 bolts, ISO 9217 and ISO 9218 washers, and ISO 1234 split pins in the assembly of ISO 7939 pulleys. ISO 9216:2002 is also applicable to nuts in the assembly of airframe rolling bearings or spherical bearings.
