General Terminology and Methods

These standards from ISO and SAE cover Standardized Threading for Screws and Bolts requirements sorted by threading. This list covers general terminology screw standards.

ISO 5408:2009

Screw threads - Vocabulary

ISO 5408:2009 specifies the fundamental terms and definitions for screw threads. These terms are applicable to symmetrical threads and unsymmetrical threads, or cylindrical threads and taper threads.

ISO 888:2012

Fasteners - Bolts, screws and studs - Nominal lengths and thread lengths

ISO 888:2012 specifies lengths and thread lengths for bolts, screws and studs for use in appropriate product standards and other relevant documents, e.g. for parts per drawing. It applies to bolts, screws and studs with ISO metric screw thread according to ISO 68-1.

ISO 725:2009

ISO inch screw threads - Basic dimensions

ISO 725:2009 specifies the basic dimensions, in inches, of ISO inch screw threads in accordance with ISO 263. The values refer to the basic profile in accordance with ISO 68-2.

ISO 5864:1993

ISO inch screw threads - Allowances and tolerances

Specifies a system of allowances and tolerances for standard thread series, covering the range of diameters from 0,06 in to 6 in, and pitches from 80 to 4 threads per inch.

ISO 4753:2011

Fasteners - Ends of parts with external ISO metric thread

ISO 4753:2011 specifies the form and dimensions of ends of parts with external ISO metric screw thread (e.g. bolt, screw and stud ends) recommended for use. They apply to standardized or non-standardized threaded parts. For each end type, a symbol is specified and it is intended that these symbols be used when specifying one of the ends for threaded fasteners.

ISO 4755:1983

Fasteners - Thread undercuts for external metric ISO threads

Lays down the form and dimensions of undercuts for bolts, screws and similar externally threaded products, recommended for use in those cases where it is needed for components such as plugs.

ISO 3508:1976

Thread run-outs for fasteners with thread in accordance with ISO 261 and ISO 262

Specifies for fully threaded screws with machined, or rolled threads pitches of the thread ranging from 0,2 mm to 6 mm and thread diameters (coarse thread) ranging from 1 mm to 68 mm; it does not apply to those threaded fasteners where special requirements are laid down in the product standards.

ISO 1501:2009

ISO miniature screw threads

ISO 1501:2009 specifies the profiles, diameter-pitch combinations, basic dimensions, tolerances, limits of size and designation for ISO miniature screw threads with nominal diameters from 0,3 mm to 1,4 mm. These threads are applicable to timepieces, optical instruments, electrical meters, measuring instruments, etc. The profiles and tolerance system for ISO miniature screw threads (S) differ from the profile and tolerance system for ISO general purpose metric screw threads (M).

ISO 263:1973

ISO inch screw threads - General plan and selection for screws, bolts and nuts - Diameter range 0.06 to 6 in

Tabulates inch threads having the basic profile for triangular threads specified in ISO 68; contains sizes in the diameter range between 0.06 to 6 inch, comprising a number of series of diameter/pitch combinations, together with a system of thread designations.

ISO 2901:2016

ISO metric trapezoidal screw threads - Basic and design profiles

ISO 2901:2016 specifies the basic and design profiles of ISO metric trapezoidal screw threads. ISO 2901:2016 is chiefly applicable to traversing threads for traversing motion on machines, tools, etc. It can also be used for fastening threads.

ISO 2902:2016

ISO metric trapezoidal screw threads - General plan

ISO 2902:2016 specifies a series of diameter and pitch combinations for ISO metric trapezoidal screw threads having the basic and design profiles according to ISO 2901. ISO 2902:2016 is chiefly applicable to traversing threads for traversing motion on machines, tools, etc. It can also be used for fastening threads.

ISO 2903:2016

ISO metric trapezoidal screw threads - Tolerances

ISO 2903:2016 specifies a tolerance system for metric trapezoidal screw threads in accordance with ISO 2902. The tolerances refer to the design profile in accordance with ISO 2901. The tolerance system does not apply to trapezoidal screw threads with special requirements on axial displacement, for example, machine tool lead and feed screws and nuts.

ISO 2904:2020

ISO metric trapezoidal screw threads - Basic dimensions

This document specifies the basic dimensions of ISO metric trapezoidal screw threads in accordance with ISO 2902. The values refer to the design profiles in accordance with ISO 2901. This document is chiefly applicable to traversing threads for traversing motion on machines, tools, etc. It can also be used for fastening threads.

ISO 6410-1:1993

Technical drawings - Screw threads and threaded parts - Part 1: General conventions

Specifies methods for representation in general: detailed representation, conventional representation, assembled threaded parts, designation and dimensioning, indication of direction of lead.

ISO 6410-2:1993

Technical drawings - Screw threads and threaded parts - Part 2: Screw thread inserts

Specifies methods for the representation: detailed representation of the true shape, conventional representation, simplified representation, designation and dimensioning.

ISO 6410-3:2021

Technical drawings - Screw threads and threaded parts - Part 3: Simplified representation

This document establishes rules for the simplified representation of threaded parts, with the exception of screw thread inserts, which are covered in ISO 6410-2. This representation is applicable when it is not necessary to show the exact shape and details of the parts (see ISO 6410-1), for example in assembly drawings.
