High Reliability Electronics SAE Standards

Standards from SAE for high reliability electronics address automotive electronics, as well as those for the aerospace industry. The electronics within a car, a fast moving, heavy object that contains within itself living people, must be reliable enough to trust with such a precious cargo. Electronics in the aerospace industry, whether designed for enormous passenger jets or for pivotal fighter jets, only raise the stakes involved higher, further solidifying the need for a standardized approach to electronics shown to be reliable in the environments and circumstances they will face.

SAE AS 5553C-2019

Counterfeit Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition

This standard is for use by organizations that procure and/or integrate and/or repair EEE parts and/or assemblies containing such items, including maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) organizations. The requirements of this standard are generic and intended to be applied/flowed down, as applicable, through the supply chain, to all organizations that procure EEE parts and/or assemblies, regardless of type, size, and product provided. The mitigation of counterfeit EEE parts in this standard is risk-based, and these mitigation steps will vary depending on the criticality of the application, desired performance, and reliability of the equipment/hardware. The requirements of this document are intended to be used in conjunction with a higher-level quality standard (e.g., AS/EN/JISQ9100, ISO-9001, ANSI/ASQC E4, ASME NQA-1, AS9120, AS9003, and ISO/TS 16949 or equivalent) and other quality management system documents. They are not intended to stand alone, supersede, or cancel requirements found in other quality management system documents, requirements imposed by contracting authorities, or applicable laws and regulations unless an authorized exemption/variance has been obtained. This document is not intended to make a legal determination of fraud, and appropriate legal counsel should be consulted for further action.


SAE AS 5643/1-2004 (SAE AS5643/1-2004)

S400 Copper Media Interface Characteristics Over Extended Distances

This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes guidelines for the use of IEEE-1394b as a data bus network in military and aerospace vehicles. It encompasses the data bus cable and its interface electronics for a system utilizing S400 over copper medium over extended lengths. This document contains extensions/restrictions to ¿off-the-shelf¿ IEEE-1394 standards, and assumes that the reader already has a working knowledge of IEEE-1394. This document does not identify specific environmental requirements (electromagnetic compatibility, temperature, vibration, etc.); such requirements will be vehicle-specific and even LRU-specific. However, the hardware requirements and examples contained herein do address many of the environmental conditions that military and aerospace vehicles may experience. One should reference the appropriate sections of MIL-STD-461E for their particular LRU, and utilize handbooks such as MIL-HDBK-454A and MIL-HDBK-5400 for guidance. This document is referred to as a ¿slash sheet¿ and accompanies the SAE Sxxxx base standard.

Test Plan/Procedure for AS5643/1 S400 Copper Media Interface Characteristics Over Extended Distances

This document establishes test plans/procedures for the AS5643/1 Slash Sheet. The AS5643/1 Slash Sheet establishes guidelines for the use of IEEE Std 1394-2008 as a data bus network in military and aerospace vehicles. It encompasses the data bus cable and its interface electronics for a system utilizing S400 over copper medium over extended lengths.

This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) provides the general performance, design, installation, test, development, and quality assurance requirements for the flight control related functions of the Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) of military piloted aircraft. It also provides specification guidance for the flight control interfaces with other systems and subsystems of the aircraft.

Handbook for Robustness Validation of Automotive Electrical/Electronic Modules

This document addresses robustness of electrical/electronic modules for use in automotive applications. Where practical, methods of extrinsic reliability detection and prevention will also be addressed. This document primarily deals with electrical/electronic modules (EEMs), but can easily be adapted for use on mechatronics, sensors, actuators and switches. EEM qualification is the main scope of this document. Other procedures addressing random failures are specifically addressed in the CPI (Component Process Interaction) section 10. This document is to be used within the context of the Zero Defect concept for component manufacturing and product use. It is recommended that the robustness of semiconductor devices and other components used in the EEM be assured using SAE J1879 OCT2007, Handbook for Robustness Validation of Semiconductor Devices in Automotive Applications. The emphasis of this document is on hardware and manufacturing failure mechanisms, however, other contemporary issues as shown in Figure 1 need to be addressed for a thorough Robustness Validation. A Pareto of contemporary issues is shown in Figure 1. Although this document addresses many of the issues shown, however some are outside the scope of this document and will need to be addressed for a thorough RV process application. Examples of issues outside the scope of this document are system interactions, interfaces, functionality, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and software. At the time of publication of this handbook, a system level Robustness Validation handbook, which addresses these issues, had been initiated.


SAE J 1879-2014 (SAE J1879-2014)

Handbook for Robustness Validation of Semiconductor Devices in Automotive Applications

This document will primarily address intrinsic reliability of electronic components for use in automotive electronics. Where practical, methods of extrinsic reliability detection and prevention will also be addressed. The current handbook primarily focuses on integrated circuit subjects, but can easily be adapted for use in discrete or passive device qualification with the generation of a list of failure mechanisms relevant to those components. Semiconductor device qualification is the main scope of the current handbook. Other procedures addressing extrinsic defects are particularly mentioned in the monitoring chapter. Striving for the target of Zero Defects in component manufacturing and product use it is strongly recommended to apply this handbook. If it gets adopted as a standard, the term “shall” will represent a binding requirement. This document does not relieve the supplier of the responsibility to assure that a product meets the complete set of its requirements.

Product Development Process and Checklist for Vehicle Electronic Systems

Since it is impossible to be all inclusive and cover every aspect of the design/validation process, this document can be used as a basis for preparation of a more comprehensive and detailed plan that reflects the accumulated "lessons learned" at a particular company. The following areas are addressed in this document: 1. Contemporary perspective including common validation issues and flaws. 2. A Robustness Validation (RV) process based on SAE J1211 handbook and SAE J2628. 3. Design checklists to aid in such a RV process.
