Louvers has application manuals and testing standards to help keep air ventilation free of debris and water.
The intent of this publication is to provide information and important points to be considered when designing or specifying installations requiring louvers. The purpose of this manual is not to provide detailed specifications; rather, it serves as a guide toward understanding the various types of louvers available and includes topics to be considered to ensure their proper use.
A compilation of AMCA Publications 200, 501, 502, and 503
1. Purpose The purpose of this standard is to establish uniform laboratory test methods for louvers. Characteristics to be determined include air leakage, air performance (pressure drop), water penetration, wind-driven rain, wind-driven sand and operational torque. It is not the purpose of this standard to establish minimum or maximum performance ratings. 2. Scope This standard may be used as a basis for testing louvers with air as the test gas. Tests conducted in accordance with the requirements of this standard are intended to demonstrate the performance of a louver and are not intended to determine the acceptability of performance. It is not in the scope of this standard to indicate actual sequences of testing or to specify minimum or maximum criteria for testing.
This standard is to be used for impact testing of louvers that are installed on the outside of buildings and to assist in meeting the requirements of the International Code Council (ICC) International Building Code, the ICC International Residential Code and any other applicable codes or specifications. The following precautionary statement pertains to sections 6 and 9 of this document: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of the regulatory limitations prior to use.
Tests conducted in accordance with the requirements of this standard are intended to demonstrate the acceptability of the louver in which water infiltration must be kept to manageable amounts during a high velocity wind driven rain event. Passing this test keeps water infiltration to manageable amounts of water. Design considerations behind these louvers should include provisions for collecting and draining the water as well as proper waterproofing of all materials and equipment that reside behind these louvers.
