Paint

Paint material testing standards are published by ASTM, ISO, and FED. ASTM D268-01 covers sampling chemical solvents used in paints to ensure health and quality. More standards are related to sampling and valuable information on the effect of humidity on paint.

ASTM D268-01(2012)

Standard Guide for Sampling and Testing Volatile Solvents and Chemical Intermediates for Use in Paint and Related Coatings and Material

1.1 This guide covers procedures for the sampling and testing of volatile solvents used in the manufacture of paint, lacquer, varnish, and related products.

ASTM D3924-16(2019)

Standard Specification for Standard Environment for Conditioning and Testing Paint, Varnish, Lacquer, and Related Materials

1.1 This specification defines the standard atmospheres for normal conditioning and testing of paint, varnish, lacquer, and related materials, at approximately ambient conditions. Note 1: See Terminology E41 , Specification E171 and Test Method E337 . 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

ISO 3270:1984

Paints and varnishes and their raw materials - Temperatures and humidities for conditioning and testing

Specifies conditions of temperature and relative humidity for general use. The test is applicable to coating materials in liquid or powder form, to wet or dry films, and their raw materials. The conditioning atmosphere and the test atmosphere are defined. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition ISO 3270-1980.

FED-STD-141D

Paint, Varnish, Lacquer and Related Materials: Methods of Inspection, Sampling and Testing

This standard elaborates the methods used to determine the physical and chemical properties of paint, varnish, lacquer, and related materials. The purpose of this standard is to establish standardized testing methodologies and to eliminate unnecessary or undesirable variations in test results when evaluating a product┐s adherence to specification requirements. If any variation or modification of the methods established in this standard is required by any specification, the procedures listed in the specification will take precedence. Any conflict between this standard and any particular specification will be resolved in favor of the specification.
