Visualizing victory over breast cancer

In a cluttered imaging physics laboratory in UCI’s School of Medicine, biomedical engineering doctoral student Justin Ducote is exploring a novel use of mammography to more precisely identify women who may be at increased risk of breast tumors.Ducote works in the lab of radiological sciences and biomedical engineering professor Sabee Molloi. He found that taking dual mammography images of a breast at different energy levels gives a clearer picture of tissue density – glandular content relative to the amount of fat. This is important because women with dense breast tissue are four to five times more likely to develop tumors.
