American National Standard Methods for Measuring the Real-Ear Attenuation of Hearing Protectors

Specifies laboratory-based procedures for measuring, analyzing, and reporting the noise-reducing capabilities of hearing protection devices. Procedures consist of psychoacoustic tests conducted on human subjects to determine the real-air attenuation measured at hearing threshold. Portions of this standard correspond to International Standard ISO 4869-1: 1990. This is the second public review for this standard. It was originally listed for public review in the January 19, 1996 issue of Standards Action. It is being resubmitted owing to substantial changes to the text.
