Preface

This is the second edition of CSA A440.4, Window, door, and skylight installation. It supersedes the previous edition, published in 1998 under the title Window and Door Installation. The title of the second edition has been revised to accommodate the inclusion of unit skylights.

1. Scope

1.1 This Standard sets forth methods for both new installation and replacement installation of factoryassembled windows, exterior doors, and unit skylights that are intended for installation in low-rise buildings and buildings used primarily for residential occupancy where (a) the windows (including window wall) are (i) within the application of CAN/CSA-A440/A440.1; or (ii) R, LC, or C class within the application of AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440; (b) the doors are (i) within the application of CAN/CGSB-82.1, CAN/CGSB-82.5, or CAN/CSA-O132; or (ii) R, LC, or C class within the application of AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440; and (c) the skylights are (i) within the application of CAN/CGSB-63.14-M89; or (ii) R, LC, or C class within the application of AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440.

1.2 This Standard provides minimum requirements for the installation of windows, doors, and unit skylights. The Standard addresses issues that could compromise the performance of the window, door, or skylight as established by testing to the requirements of the Standards listed in Clause 1.1. Note: This Standard is considered supplemental to the manufacturer's installation instructions.

1.3 This Standard covers both the pre-installation and post-installation procedures for installing windows, doors, and unit skylights. It does not apply to the fabrication or assembly of units, whether such fabrication takes place in a factory or at the installation site.

1.4 The application of this Standard requires a working knowledge of applicable federal, provincial, and local building codes and regulations specifically concerning, but not limited to, required means of egress and requirements for safety glazing.

1.5 This Standard does not apply to the (a) selection of windows, doors, or unit skylights for a given application; (b) selection of other products for use in the installation; (c) installation of storm windows or storm doors; (d) maintenance of installed windows, doors, or unit skylights; or (e) rebuilding of windows, doors, or unit skylights. Note: For product selection information, see CAN/CSA-A440/A440.1.

1.6 This Standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It does not set out requirements relating to the safety of the person installing the units.
