Installation code for hydronic heating systems. Includes Update No. 1.

Intended Use

The B214 is intended to provide system designers, heating contractors, installers and regulatory authorities with minimum requirements for the installation, extension , alteration and replacement of hydronic heating systems as described in the National Building Code of Canada, Part 9, Housing and Small Buildings, Article 9.33.4.2. These include residential and commercial buildings of 3 or less storeys with a building area of less than 600 square meters.

The Code applies to open and closed hydronic heating systems such as , hydronic space heating , radiant heating (e.g. floor, wall ceiling), convectors, combo systems, snow melt systems, and pool and spa heating systems to name a few.

Preface

This is the second edition of CSA B214, Installation code for hydronic heating systems. It supersedes the previous edition published in 2001.

1. Scope

1.1 This Code sets out the minimum provisions for the installation, extension, alteration, and renewal of hydronic heating systems.

1.2 This Code applies to open and closed hydronic heating systems. These systems include (a) hydronic space heating; (b) radiant heating (wall, floor, ceiling); (c) convectors; (d) fan coils; (e) combo systems; (f) indirect-fired domestic water heating; (g) pool and spa heating; (h) snow melt systems; and (i) other auxiliary systems.

1.3 In CSA Standards, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and "can" is used to express possibility or capability. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.4 The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
