CSA C22.2 No. 213-M1987 (R2013)

C22.2 NO. 213-M1987 (R2013) - Non-Incendive Electrical Equipment for Use in Class I, Division 2 Hazardous Locations

Intended Use

Products evaluated to this standard are applied in hazardous locations which are defined as buildings, or parts thereof in which:
(a) an explosive gas atmosphere is present, or may be present, in the air in quantities that require special precautions for the construction, installation, and use of electrical equipment;
(b) combustible dusts are present, or may be present, in the form of clouds or layers in quantities to require special precautions for the construction, installation, and operation of electrical equipment; or
(c) combustible fibres or flyings are manufactured, handled or stored in a manner that will require special precautions for the construction, installation, and operation of electrical equipment.areas that are or could be a hazardous location due to the presence of an explosive gas atmosphere or (a mixture with air, under atmospheric conditions, of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour, or mist in which, after ignition, combustion spreads throughout the unconsumed mixture).

1. Scope

1.1 This Standard applies to process measurement and control equipment that has been designed and assessed for use either in, or in conjunction with, Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations as defined in the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. The principles may also be applied to other similar types of equipment.

1.2 This Standard also covers portable battery-powered equipment.

1.3 The requirements of this Standard are based on consideration of ignition in locations made hazardous by the presence of explosive atmospheres under normal atmospheric conditions. For the purposes of this Standard, normal atmospheric conditions are generally considered to be (a) an ambient temperature of -50 to +40°C; (b) an oxygen concentration of approximately 21% by volume; and (c) a pressure of 86 to 106 kPa. Note: Equipment specified for atmospheric conditions beyond the above limits are subject to investigation.
