Screws with coarse thread and reduced shank for captive applications

This document contains specifications about bolts and screws with metric thread from M3 to M30 with different head shapes and with a shank diameter smaller than the minor diameter of the thread. Two styles of shank (with short and long thread) are specified for each bolt and screw type. In the case of an appropriate design of a bolted connection, bolts and screws according to this document can be placed as captive elements and can be locked against loss by means of the application of a suitable locking device.*This standard contains specifications for screws with threads from M3 to M30 with different head shapes and a shank diameter which is smaller than the core diameter of the thread. The shank style is intended in the designs K (short thread) and L (long thread). Inthe case of appropriate design of the bolted connections, the bolts and screws can be placed as captive elements; they can additionally be locked against loss, for example, by attaching a suitable locking device, where appropriate. These screws are not regarded as thin shank or expansion screws. The application of the standard is also analogously permitted for non-standardized products. Due to the shank diameter, the minimum breaking forces according to DIN EN ISO 8981, DIN EN ISO 3506-1 and DIN EN 28839 are not achieved. This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 067-00-02 AA "Verbindungselemente mit metrischem Außengewinde" ("Fasteners with metric external threads") of the Fasteners Standards Committee (FMV) at DIN e. V.
