Consequences classes for building structures
Eurocodes became mandatory in early 2009 as a basis for the design of load-bearing building structures in*Denmark. With this, through Eurocode 0, the concept of "consequence classes" was introduced to "... take into account the consequences of failure or malfunction of the construction..." (DS/EN 1990:2007). At the same time, the term *consequence class replaced the term "safety class" used in the previous Danish construction standards.*The terms "safety class" and "consequence class" have, in experience, given rise to uncertainty about*placing constructions and buildings in the various classes both during design and construction case processing.*In addition, choosing a consequence class can be associated with increased construction costs and increased expenses for*control of both design and execution, which is why the choice may involve conflicts of interest.*This DS/INF 1990 describes and elaborates the basis and guidelines for placing constructions in*consequence classes with a view to establishing a common framework of understanding for authorities, builders and*designers, which can simultaneously help to prevent unnecessary construction costs and too little safety.
