NFPA 1977: Standard on Protective Clothing and Equipment for Wildland Fire Fighting, 2011 Edition

The 2011 NFPA 1977 includes changes that improve performance of protective clothing and equipment, and help users understand the importance of the Standard.

NFPA 1977: Standard on Protective Clothing and Equipment for Wildland Fire Fighting specifies the minimum product labeling, and instructions for the purchaser; design criteria; performance requirements; testing methods to determine pass or fail; and certification requirements for protective clothing, helmets, gloves, and footwear that are designed to protect fire fighters against adverse environmental effects during wildland fire fighting operations.

Only in the 2011 edition:

  • Double layering of wildland fire fighting PPE garments is limited to no more than 30% of surface area to allow the garment to breathe.
  • Added Annex material discusses radiant heat protection (RPP) vs. total heat loss (THL) as it pertains to heat stress injuries to fire fighters.
  • Modifications to standard sizing chart for garments include reasonable ''ease'' to accommodate a broader number of wildland fire fighters.
  • New requirements for protective driving gloves that are distinct from protective work gloves

Safeguard wildland fire fighters by making sure PPE is up-to-the task. Order the 2011 NFPA 1977 today. (Softbound, Approx. 64 pp., 2011)
