NFPA 67 Guide on Explosion Protection for Gaseous Mixtures in Pipe Systems, 2019 edition

This guide applies to the design, installation, and operation of piping systems containing flammable gases where there is a potential for ignition. This guide addresses protection methods for use where the pipe explosion risk is due to either a deflagration or a detonation. This guide does not apply to runaway reactions, decompositions, or oxidants other than oxygen. The purpose of this guide is to provide the user with criteria for designing piping systems to protect against damage from deflagrations or detonations due to combustion of flammable atmospheres therein. Protection of a pipe system can be by application of explosion prevention methods (see NFPA 69), deflagration venting (see NFPA 68), passive or active suppression and isolation methods, or containment. Deflagration containment or deflagration venting should include layout or designs that minimize the probability of deflagration-todetonation transition (DDT), unless the nonventing components of the system are designed to contain detonation.
