Plastics - Methods for determining the density of non-cellular plastics - Part 1: Immersion method, liquid pycnometer method and titration method (ISO 1183-1:2025)

This document specifies three methods for determining the density of non-cellular plastics materials in the form of bubble-free molded or extruded articles, or as powder, flakes, or granules. Method A: Immersion method, for bubble-free solid plastics materials (excluding powders); Method B: Liquid pycnometer method, for particles, powder, flakes, granules, or comminuted finished articles; Method C: Titration method, for plastics materials in any bubble-free form. NOTE: Density is frequently used to monitor changes in the physical structure or composition of plastics materials. Density can also be useful in assessing the uniformity of samples or test specimens. Often, the density of plastics materials depends on the method chosen for preparing the test specimens. Where this is the case, precise details of the test specimen manufacturing process should be included in the appropriate material specification. This note applies to all three methods. Appendix C provides further information on calculating the volume of test specimens used to determine density by Method A (immersion method).
