Ophthalmic optics - Spectacle frames - Requirements and test methods (ISO 12870:2024)

This document specifies essential requirements and their test methods for unglazed spectacle frames intended for use with prescription lenses. It is valid at the time of the sale of the spectacle frame by the manufacturer or supplier to the reseller. This document is applicable to: - all mass-produced frames types, including rimless, semi-rimless and foldable frames; - Spectacle frames produced by additive manufacturing, e.g. 3D printing; - Spectacle frames made of natural organic materials; - the frame or holder of lenses specifically designed to be attached to certain models of spectacle frames, but not to their lenses or filters, to which ISO 16034 or ISO 12312 1 applies; - Prescription inserts designed to attach to certain models of e.g. eye protection, sunglasses or diving masks. Parts of this document are applicable to custom-made spectacle frames – see 3.1.3 and Table 1. NOTE: See Appendix A for recommendations on the design of spectacle frames and terms to be used to describe metal frames. This document does not apply to eye protection frames to which ISO 16321 1 applies, or to sunglasses with afocal filters, to which ISO 12312 1 applies.
