This International Standard describes the principles and framework conditions of the LIFE cycle assessment, including (a) the definition of the objective and the scope for the assessment of the life cycle assessment; (b) the balance sheet phase; (c) the impact assessment phase; (d) the evaluation phase; (e) the LCA report and its critical audit; (f) the limits of the life cycle assessment; (g) the relationships between the phases of a life-cycle assessment and (h) the conditions for the application of value holdings and optional components. This International Standard includes life cycle assessment studies and physical assessment studies. It does not contain a detailed description of the methodology of the LCA, nor does it specify the methods specific to each phase of the LIFE cycle assessment. The envisaged application of the results of eco-balances or physical balance sheets shall be taken into account in the definition of the objective and the scope of the investigation, but the application itself does not fall within the scope of this International Standard.
