ONORM EN ISO 21149:2023

Cosmetics - Microbiology - Enumeration and detection of aerobic mesophilic bacteria (ISO 21149:2017 + Amd 1:2022) (consolidated version)

This document provides general instructions for the counting and the detection of aerobic mesophile bacteria present in cosmetic means - by counting the colonies on an agar medium according to aerobic fraud or - by checking the absence of bacterial growth after enrichment. Because of the large variety of cosmetic means within this area of application, this procedure is not necessarily applicable to all details to certain agents (e.g. certain products that are not mixed with water). Alternatively, other procedures (e.g. automated) are used for the examinations listed here, provided that their equivalence has been demonstrated or that the procedure has otherwise proven to be suitable. If necessary, counted or proven microorganisms may be determined with suitable identification tests described in the norms listed under the literature references. In order to ensure the quality of the product and security for consumers, it is advisable to carry out a suitable microbiological risk analysis to determine the types of cosmetic means for which this document can be used. Products that represent a low microbiological risk (see ISO 29621) include those with low water activity, alcoholic products, products with extreme pH values, etc.
