Guidelines for applying thermal spray coatings to protect pulp mill process equipment against corrosion

These guidelines cover quality-related procedures for field applied, metallic thermal spray coatings for corrosion protection in pulp mill process vessels, including digesters, flash tanks, evaporators and concentrators. Thermal spray coatings for protecting recovery boiler tubes against corrosion, restoring Yankee dryer surfaces, hardsurfacing calendar rolls, and ceramic coatings used on various paper machine rolls are not covered by this document, although basic, application-related information and qualification procedures described herein apply to those coatings as well.

These guidelines inform the reader about essential properties thermal sprayed coatings require to perform as expected. Issues to address and items to include in job specifications are listed. Coatings are generically described. No recommendations are given either for coating process or material for specific service applications.
