Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) - Automatic Protection

The purpose of this standard is to establish specifications for the automatic protection switching of optical facilities using the optical interface standard specified in ANSI T1.105-1995. This standard defines the contents of the Automatic Protection Switching (APS) bytes within the SONET signal. These APS bytes carry the signaling associated with establishing and releasing the protection of the optical facility. Moreover, since different network architectures use different types of automatic protection switching, the relevant network architectures are also discussed.
