Test method standards for automotive and aerospace adhesives address test methods for a variety of adhesives, including metal bonding adhesives, hot melt pressure sensitive archive adhesives, their working properties, and other properties. Particular attention is paid to the testing of the strength and durability of the adhesives. These standards are related to the adhesives that don't fit the other categories of ASTM test methods.


ASTM D3931-08(2015)

Standard Test Method for Determining Strength of Gap-Filling Adhesive Bonds in Shear by Compression Loading

1.1 This test method covers the determination of comparative shear properties of gap-filling adhesives in wood-to-wood joints at specified thicknesses of bondline in the dry condition, when tested on standard specimens under specified conditions of preparation, conditioning, and loading in compression. This test method is intended as an evaluation of gap-filling adhesives such as those used to bond plywood to lumber, lumber to lumber, and other similar materials in building constructions. 1.2 This test method also may be used to determine shear properties of gap-filling adhesives in species of wood and in thicknesses of bondline other than those specified for the comparative tests of shear properties within this test method. Standard Test Method for Measuring Strength and Shear Modulus of Nonrigid Adhesives by the Thick-Adherend Tensile-Lap Specimen

1.1 This test method describes a method of measuring the shear modulus and rupture stress in shear of adhesives in bonded joints. The method employs lap-shear specimens with wood, metal, or composite adherends, with adhesives having shear moduli ranging up to 700 MPa (100 000 psi). This test method is suitable generally for joints in which the ratio of adherend tensile modulus to adhesive shear modulus is greater than 300 to 1. It is not suitable for adhesives that have a high shear modulus in the cured state and that also require elimination of volatile constituents during cure. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. Standard Test Method for Measuring Shear Properties of Structural Adhesives by the Modified-Rail Test

1.1 This test method describes equipment and procedures to measure the shear modulus and shear strength of adhesive layers between rigid adherends. The equipment may also be used for determining the adhesive s shear creep compliance, the effects of strain history such as cyclic loading upon shear properties, and a failure criteria for biaxial stress conditions such as shear plus tension and shear plus compression. 2 1.2 High-density wood shall be the preferred substrate. The practical upper limit on the shear modulus that can be measured is determined by the shear modulus of the adherends and by the strain measuring device. Thus, the practical limit of adhesive shear modulus that can be measured using high-density wood adherends is about 690 MPa (1 10 5 psi). Note 1: Wood-base composites, metal, plastic, reinforced plastics, and other common construction materials may also be used for adherends. 1.3 The range of specimen dimensions that can be tested are: width 1.59 to 12.70 mm (0.0625 to 0.500 in.), length 102 to 203 mm (4 to 8 in.), and adherend thickness 13 to 25 mm (0.50 to 1.00 in.). The standard specimen dimensions shall be: width 3.18 mm (0.125 in.), length 203 mm (8 in.), and adherend thickness 19 mm (0.75 in.). Bondline thicknesses from 0.15 to 3.18 mm (0.006 to 0.125 in.) may be tested. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. Standard Test Methods for Resistance of Adhesive Preparations in Container to Attack by Bacteria, Yeast, and Fungi

1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the resistance of liquid adhesive preparations to microbial attack in the container by challenging adhesive specimens with cultures of bacteria, yeast, or fungi, and checking for their ability to return to sterility. Standard Test Method for Accelerated Aging of Adhesive Joints by the Oxygen-Pressure Method

1.1 This test method describes how to estimate the relative resistance to deterioration of adhesive films and adhesive-bonded joints placed in a high-pressure oxygen environment. The instructions include both wood-to-wood and wood-to-metal joints as well as free film of adhesive. The effects of chemicals such as fire retardants, preservatives, or wood extractives, can be evaluated by using materials containing these chemicals for adherends. 1.2 This test method is primarily intended for elastomer-based construction adhesives, but is also applicable to other types of adhesives that may be susceptible to oxygen degradation. This accelerated test does not correlate exactly with the natural aging of the adhesive because of the varied conditions of natural aging and the absence of factors such as moisture and stress. The results of this accelerated test are only comparative and must be evaluated against the performance of bonded joints whose natural and accelerated aging characteristics are known. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. Standard Test Methods for Multi-Modal Strength Testing of Autohesives (Contact Adhesives)

1.1 These test methods cover procedures by which autohesives can be tested in four commonly practiced stressing modes, namely: compression shear, cleavage, climbing drum peel, and T-peel, and in various combinations of rigid-to-rigid, flexible-to-rigid, and flexible-to-flexible adherends that include wood, aluminum, steel flakeboard, and plastic laminates. Quantitative test methods that involve bond formation by impact are also provided. Three pressure modes are provided: static, roller, and impact. Because there are many types of contact adhesives being used to bond many different materials under widely differing conditions, these test methods are designed to allow the user to select the test mode, coating thickness, temperature and relative humidity conditions, pressure magnitude and mode, open time, and bond-conditioning time. 1.1.1 The bond-formation process used with autohesives is unlike that of all other adhesives and in consequence, testing of autohesives requires methods that are unlike those provided by other ASTM standards.
