SAE Standards for Compressors, Pumps, and Cylinders

Cylinder, pump, and compressor standards address performance, design, safety, and quality requirements for cylinders, pumps, and compressors that are used in aircraft, cars, and commercial vehicles. These standards seek to optimize the overall quality and performance of cylinders, pumps, and compressors and address important factors and issues that face them. For example: The SAE AIR 1922B-2017 standard addresses and defines factors that affect hydraulic pump life such as the mounting of the hydraulic pump and hydraulic fluid pressure.

SAE International (SAE) has more than 240 Standards Development Committees that collaborate specifically on the development of consensus standards. Several of these committees are specifically focused on developing standards related to cylinders, pumps, and compressors. These committees strive to improve, upgrade, and maintain uniform and comprehensive standards.

Cylinder Standards

Cylinder Standards address the performance requirements and test procedures for a variety of cylinders including oxygen cylinders, wheel cylinders, hydraulic cylinders, brake cylinders, power cylinders, and aircraft engine cylinders. SAE International (SAE) has developed numerous standards for cylinders that are used in aircrafts and vehicles. These standards address specific issues that are associated with cylinders such as corrosion, leakage, endurance, performance, maintenance, integrity, and friction. Many of the SAE Cylinder Standards were developed by the Piston and Ring Standards Committee (fact sheet).

Pump Standards

Pump standards address the performance, test, and design requirements for pumps that are used in commercial vehicles and aircrafts. Additionally, pump standards serve as a set of guidelines and recommended practices related to the maintenance, configuration, and design of pumps. One major developer of pump standards is SAE International (SAE). SAE has developed a variety of pump standards that are applicable to hydraulic pumps and fuel injection pumps. SAE has several technical committees that have contributed to the development of these standards, including the Truck and Bus Aerodynamics and Fuel Economy Committee (fact sheet) and the A-6C6 Power Sources Committee (fact sheet).

Compressor Standards

Compressor standards primarily focus on the design, performance, and quality requirements for compressors. These standards also provide recommended test procedures and guides for the application and use of compressors. SAE International (SAE) has developed several compressor standards that are applicable to air conditioning, gas, and brake compressors that are used in aerospace applications and commercial vehicles. Several SAE Technical Committees, including the Truck and Bus Brake Supply and Control Components Committee (fact sheet) and the E-25 General Standards for Aerospace and Propulsion Systems Committee (fact sheet), contributed to the development of these standards.
