American National Standard specifications A108.T, .M, .01, .02, .1A, .1B, .1C, .4, .5, .6, .8, .9, .10, .11, .12, .13, .14, .15, .16, .17, .18, .21 and .22 define the installation of ceramic tile. A118.1, .3, .4, .5, .6, .7, .8, .9, .10, .11, .12, .13, .15, .16, .18, .19 and A136.1 define the test methods and physical properties for ceramic tile installation materials. These standards are intended to be referenced or included in the ceramic tile sections of project specifications.
A guide to assist in clarifying and standardizing installation specifications for tile. Each installation recommendation, or method, requires a properly designed, constructed, and prepared substructure using materials and construction techniques that meet nationally recognized material and construction standards. 1.1 This test method covers procedures for measuring the corner, diagonal, and edge warpages of ceramic tile.
1.1.1 Tile Requirements for Corner, Diagonal, and Edge Warpage Measurement
Tile should be nominally flat, uniform in overall thickness, smooth faced, and rectangular in shape, including square.
1.1.2 Tile Requirements for Corner Warpage Measurement
All facial edge dimensions equal to or greater than 2.36 in. (60 mm) in length.
1.1.3 Tile Requirements for Edge and Diagonal Warpage Measurement
All facial edge dimensions equal to or greater than 2 in. (51 mm) in length.
1.1.4 Trim Tile meeting the descriptions in 1.1.1 – 1.1.3 except that only a part of the tile surface is flat. (Surface trim tile should be treated as flat tile whenever possible.)
1.2 This test method is not applicable to tile having embossed surfaces that are not flat, or that have a combination of variable body thickness and an irregular face.

American National Standard Specification A137.3 describes the minimum physical properties and grading procedures for gauged porcelain tiles and gauged porcelain tile panels/slabs. It provides quality criteria for buyers, specifiers, installers, manufacturers, and the public in general. ”Gauged” means manufactured to a thickness that is specific and largely associated with installation and use.
