TAPPI, the Technical Association for the Pulp, Paper and Converting Industry, is a nonprofit organization that develops and publishes standards concerning the pulp, paper, packaging and converting industries, as well as several related industries. Headquartered near Atlanta, United States, TAPPI standards are used by its approximately 14,000 members. TAPPI is a major publisher, putting out several industry-specific periodicals as well as a peer-reviewed journal. TAPPI also serves as the administrator for the U.S. TAGs (United States Technical Advisory Group) to ISO/TC 6 (International Organization for Standardization/Technical Committee) and to two of its subcommittees. Daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance checklists

This technical information paper is to be used as a guide to establish specific plant maintenance checklists. It is a starting point, and modifications will be required to fit specific plant circumstances as dictated by actual machine types, and other local factors.

Internal tearing resistance of paper (elmendorf-type method)

This method measures the force perpendicular to the plane of the paper required to tear multiple plies through a specified distance after the tear has been started using an Elmendorf-type tearing tester. The measured results can be used to calculate the approximate tearing resistance of a single sheet. It is not suitable for single-ply tear testing; a separate method for single-ply tear will be available. For highly directional boards and papers, prepare specimens according to T 496 "Specimen Preparation for Cross Directional Internal Tearing Resistance for Paper, Paperboard and Related Materials." For edge-tear resistance see TAPPI T 470 "Edge Tearing Resistance of Paper (Finch Method)." Caution is recommended in interpreting results from weakly bonded sheets, especially those containing lightly refined long-fibered chemical pulps. The low rate of tear when multiple plies are torn simultaneously may produce erroneously high results. See reference 15.

Dirt in pulp - chart method

This method (1,2) is adapted to the numerical estimation of dirt in pulp and recycled pulp in terms of equivalent black area. The results will differ from those obtained by TAPPI T 246 "Foreign Particulate Matter in Pulp by Transmitted Light (w/d)" in that it is the contrasting color of foreign matter rather than its opaqueness that affects the result. An automated procedure for dirt count can be found in TAPPI T 563 "Equivalent Black Area (EBA) and Count of Visible Dirt in Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard by Image Analysis." Both this procedure and T 563 are based on Equivalent Black Area (EBA) measurement.

Dirt in Paper and Paperboard

This method (1-3) is suited for the visual estimation of dirt in paper or paperboard in terms of equivalent black area. For dirt in pulp, see TAPPI T 213 "Dirt in Pulp."

Score bend test

This procedure is used to determine the score bend resistance of a scored and unscored sample of a paperboard carton. Score bend resistance of a score on a paper carton is an important parameter to determine the force required to close a carton flap during a product filling operation on a packaging machine.

This procedure describes a qualitative method for evaluating the relative quality of scores in corrugated containers.

Bending stiffness, four point method

This procedure specifies the method of determining the bending stiffness, also called flexural rigidity, in the machine and cross directions, of corrugated board using four-point loading. The procedure may also be used for solid boards and paperboard.

Dirt count in paper and paperboard (optical character recognition - OCR)

  1. This method is suited for the numerical estimation of cleanliness for optical character recognition (OCR) purposes of paper and paperboard in terms of the frequency of dirt, specks, or marks. For other dirt count methods, see TAPPI T 437 "Dirt in Paper and Paperboard," TAPPI T 213 "Dirt in Pulp," and TAPPI T 563, "Equivalent Black Area (EBA) and Count of Visible Dirt in Pulp, Paper and Paperboard by Image Analysis."
  2. This method may be used in applications where the number of specks per unit area rather than the equivalent black area is required.
  3. In this method, each dirt speck is counted individually regardless of size, shape, or color. This differs from TAPPI T 437 where the dirt is expressed in terms of equivalent black area and is a function of its color, contrast with the background, and shape.

Drop test for fiberboard shipping containers

This method describes procedures for determining the ability of fiberboard containers to protect their contents and/or to withstand impact in free-fall drops. These procedures are specifically designed for controlled drop testing of solid fiber or corrugated shipping containers. They do not apply to cylindrical containers or cans made of fiber. This test is not normally used on packages heavier than 45.2 kg (100 lb). No single procedure is applicable to all handling, transportation and environmental conditions. Listed in the Appendix are alternative procedures that may be used at the tester's discretion.

Guidelines for nondestructive examination of suction roll shells

The purpose of this Technical Information Paper is to guide suction roll shell users through a ondestructive examination of their shells. Although this document is intended primarily for use with shells that have been in service, it is also applicable to new shells. TAPPI TIP 0402-11 describes liquid dye penetrant examination techniques for new shells 1 (superscript numbers refer to eferences at the end of this document). TIP 0402-17 2 describes procedures for documentation of weld repairs which are sometimes performed during manufacture of suction rolls. Timely discovery of cracking, corrosion or other forms of distress is important for avoiding sudden or catastrophic failures of shells in service. This TIP discusses various nondestructive examination techniques and provides general guidelines for examination frequency. In addition, types of indications that are typically found in shells, and procedures for documenting shell condition are described. This document does not provide guidelines for determining suitability for service or the remaining useful life of a particular shell.
